귀거래할 곳 별로 없는 우리.
일천한 역사라고 비웃던 미국에도 백년 넘은 건물에서
새역사가 계승되고 있다. 대학 캠퍼스 앞 백여년된 술집, 빵집,
레스토랑에서 미국의 장래가 역사와 이어지고 있다.
하물며 유럽이야...

한국인들은 지난 수세기에 걸쳐 겪은 많은 전란의 잿더미로부터 일어나 한국을 오늘날 경제 강국의 반열에 올려 놓았습니다. 그 과정에서 그들은 과거를 결코 돌아보지 않았습니다. 고층 아파트와 사무실 건물, 그리고 고속도로를 새로이 건설하기 위해 눈 앞에 보이는 거의 모든 것들을 불도저로 밀어냈습니다.
Koreans rose from the ashes of the many wars of recent centuries to become the economic powerhouse their country is today. In that process, they never looked back. They bulldozed everything in sight to build new high-rise apartments, office buildings, and highways.
그러나 불행히도 지난 수십 년간 한국인들은 지난 날의 모든 빈곤을 기억에서 지워 버리면서 개발이라는 이름 아래 자신들이 무엇을 파괴하고 있는지 알지 못하였습니다. 마침내 한국인들은 그들이 돌아갈 수 있는 마음과 영혼의 고향을 거의 남겨두지 않았다는 것을 깨닫기 시작했습니다. 그들이 다녔던 60년 역사를 자랑하던 초등학교는 사라졌습니다. 그들이 젊고 원대한 꿈을 서로 나누던 대학가의 아늑하고 아담한 찻집들은 이미 오래 전에 자취를 감추었습니다. 그들이 낭만의 시간들을 함께 하던 그런 식당들도 더 이상 간 곳 없이 사라졌습니다. 그들의 지친 영혼을 쉬게 해주며 유구한 역사를 견뎌온 천년 사찰도 부주의한 산불에 잿더미로 변하고 말았습니다. 이 모든 안타까운 일들은 충분이 막을 수 있었습니다.
Unfortunately, they forgot to look at all the poverty, and they have not been aware of what they were destroying in the name of development over the last several decades. Finally they have begun to realize they have almost nothing to come home to. Gone is the 60 year-old elementary school they attended. The cozy little university teahouses where they shared their young and wild dreams disappeared a long time ago. The restaurants where they shared romantic moments are nowhere to be found. Buddhist temples built more than a thousand years ago and where they rested their weary souls have been burned by careless wildfires. All of this could have been prevented.
전시된 사진의 판매 대금은 개발이라는 명목 하에 전국적으로 끊임없이 지속되는 파괴의 위험에 놓인 역사적인 구조물을 보호해야 할 필요성을 국민 대중에게 일깨우기 위한 용도로 쓰일 것입니다. 이번 전시회는 우리 국민들이 다른 나라에서 이런 역사적 문화적 유산을 잘 보존하려는 노력을 어떻게 얼마나 열심히 하는지 알게 하는 데에 그 목적이 있습니다. 저희들은 이번 전시회를 통하여 전국적으로 이 땅의 많은 젊은이들이 이러한 명분을 접하여 알게 되고 참여할 수 있기를 바랍니다.
Funds raised by selling each photo print will be used to inspire the Korean public about the need for preserving historic structures that are in imminent danger of destruction in the name of development throughout Korea. This exhibition has been planned to help Koreans learn about preservation efforts in other countries. We hope that it contributes to nationwide awareness and participation in this cause by young people.
