버드나무 정원을 지나서

내 사랑과 나는 만났습니다.

She passed the salley gardens
With little snow-white feet.

그녀는 눈처럼 하얗고 작은 발로
버드나무 정원을 지나쳐갔지요.

She bid me take love easy,

그녀는 여유롭게 사랑하라 했지만
As the leaves grow on the tree;

마치 나무에서 잎사귀가 돋아나듯..

But I, being young and foolish,
그때의 나는 어리고 바보 같아서
With her would not agree.
그 말을 곧이듣지 않았습니다.

강가 옆 들판에 내 사랑과 난 서있었죠.

내 비스듬한 어깨위에 그녀의 눈처럼 흰 손을 올려 놓았죠.

마치 둑에서 풀이 쉽게 자라나듯..

원제는 "An Old Song Resung"(다시 불러본 옛 노래)로

영국의 20세기 대표시인인 Yeats가

슬라이고의 밸리소데어라는 마을에서 농사 짓는 어느 할머니가

가끔 혼자서 기억을 더듬어 불렀던 3행짜리 불완전한 옛 노래를

다시 다듬어 완성시킨 아일랜드의 민요이다.
