모래와 바위와 눈밭을 지나 한참을 걸은 후에야 어린 왕자는 겨우 길을 만났습니다. 그리고 모든 길은 사람이 사는 곳으로 통했죠.
"안녕." 어린 왕자가 말했습니다. 그는 장미가 만발한 정원 앞에 서 있었어요. "안녕." 장미들이 대답했답니다.
It happened that after walking for a long time through sand, and rock, and snow, the little prince at last came upon a road.
And all roads lead to the abodes of men.
"Good morning," said the roses.
어린 왕자는 장미들을 자세히 들여다 보았어요. 그것들은 모두 자신의 꽃과 닮아 있었습니다.
"넌 누구니?" 어린 왕자가 깜짝 놀라 물었습니다.
"우린 장미야." 장미들이 대답했죠.
The little prince gazed at them. They all looked like his flower.
"Who are you?" he demanded, thunderstruck.
"We are roses," the roses said.
그러자 슬픔이 밀려들었어요. 어린 왕자의 꽃은 말했었죠. 이 우주 전체에서 같은 종류로는 자신이 유일한 존재라고... 그런데 여기 한 정원에만 5천 송이나 있다니! 그들은 모두 비슷비슷했어요.
And he was overcome with sadness. His flower has told him that she was the only one of her kind in all the universe.
And here were five thousand of them, all alike, in one single garden!
"내 꽃이 이걸 본다면 매우 당황할 거야." 어린 왕자가 혼자 중얼 거렸습니다." 웃음거리가 되지 않기 위해 지독하게 기침을 해댈거야. 그리고는 죽은 척을 하겠지. 그러면 난 마지못해 소생시키기 위해 간호하는 척 해야 할거야. 그렇게 하지 않으면 정말로 죽어버릴지도 모르거든..."
"She would be very much annoyed," he said to himself, " if she should see that... She would cough most dreadfully, and she would pretend that she was dying, to avoid being laughed at.
And I should be obliged to pretend that I was nursing her bach to life - for if I did not do that, to humble myself also, she would really allow herself to die..."
그리고 어린 왕자는 생각을 이어갔습니다. "난 내가 부자라고 생각했어. 세상에서 유일한 꽃을 가지고 있으니까. 그런데 내가 가진 거라곤 평범한 장미 한 송이였던 거야. 장미 한 송이, 그리고 무릎 높이밖에 안 되는 화산 세개. 그나마 그 중 하나는 영원히 죽어 있겠지... 이래선 내가 훌륭한 왕자라고 할 수 없잖아..."
어린 왕자는 풀밭에 주저앉아 울었답니다.
Then he went on with his reflections: "I thought that I was rich, with a flower that was unique in all the world; and all I had was a common rose. A common rose, and three volcanoes that come up to my kness - and one of them perhaps extinct forever... That doesn't make me a very great prince..."
And he lay down in the grass and cried.
