When the earth was still flat,
대지가 아직 평평했고
And the clouds made of fire,
구름들은 불타고 있던 시절
And mountains stretched up to the sky,
그리고 산맥은 하늘까지,
Sometimes higher,
또 가끔은 그 보다도 높게 뻗어 있던 그 때에
Folks roamed the earth Like big rolling kegs.
사람들은 커다란 술통이 굴러다니듯 대지 위를 배회했지.
They had two sets of arms.
그들에겐 두 쌍의 팔과
They had two sets of legs.
두 쌍의 다리,
They had two faces peering Out of one giant head
하나의 큰 머리에서 나온 두개의 얼굴을 가지고 있었어.
So they could watch all around them
그래서 그들은 모든 주위를 한꺼번에 볼 수 있었고
As they talked while they read.
읽으면서 동시에 말할 수 있었지
And they never knew nothing of love.
그 때 그들은 사랑에 대해선 아무것도 몰랐어.

And there were three sexes then,
그래서 그 때는 세 개의 성이 있었는데
One that looked like two men Glued up back to back,
하나는 두 남자가 등이 붙은 것 같은 모양으로
Called the children of the sun.
태양의 아이라고 불렸었지.
And similar in shape and girth Were the children of the earth.
지구의 아이 역시 비슷한 모양과 사이즈였는데
They looked like two girls Rolled up in one.
두 여자가 하나로 합쳐진 모습이었어.
And the children of the moon Were like a fork shoved on a spoon.
그리고 달의 아이들은 숟가락에 포크가 겹쳐진
They were part sun, part earth Part daughter, part son.
모양으로 한쪽은 태양 한쪽은 지구 즉 한쪽은 딸 한 쪽은 아들이었어.

Now the gods grew quite scared Of our strength and defiance
어느 날 신들은 인간의 힘과 도전에 꽤나 겁을 먹게 되었지
And Thor said,
그 때, 토르가 말했어.
"I'm gonna kill them all With my hammer, Like I killed the giants."
"내가 거인족을 죽였던 것처럼 내 망치로 전부 몰살시키리라"
And Zeus said,
그러자, 제우스가 말했지
"No, You better let me Use my lightening, like scissors,
Like I cut the legs off the whales And dinosaurs into lizards."
"아냐, 내게 맡겨. 내가 고래의 발을 자르고 공룡을 잘게 썰어
도마뱀을 만든 것처럼 내 번개를 가위처럼 써 줄 테니까"
Then he grabbed up some bolts
그러더니 벼락을 몇 개 집어 들고
And he let out a laugh,
큰 웃음을 한번 내 뱉고는 이렇게 말했어.
Said, "I'll split them right down the middle. Gonna cut them right up in half."
"딱 중간을 쪼개 주리라. 정확히 반쪽으로 잘라 주리라"
And then storm clouds gathered above Into great balls of fire
그리고는 폭풍이 하늘위에 모이더니 거대한 불덩이가 되었어.
And then fire shot down From the sky in bolts
그리고 불이! 벼락이 되어 하늘로부터 쏘아졌지.
Like shining blades Of a knife.
마치 빛나는 칼날처럼!
And it ripped Right through the flesh
Of the children of the sun And the moon And the earth.
그 불이 태양과, 달과, 지구의 아이들의 살을 찢고 뜯어버린 거야.
And some Indian god
그리고 어떤 인도의 신은
Sewed the wound up into a hole,
그 상처를 구멍이 되도록 꿰매어
Pulled it round to our belly
배 쪽으로 당겨서 옮겨놓아
To remind us of the price we pay.
우리가 치룬 대가를 언제나 기억할 수 있게 했지.
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
그리고 오시리스와 나일 강의 신들은
Gathered up a big storm To blow a hurricane,
커다란 폭풍우를 몰고 와 태풍을 불게 하여
To scatter us away, In a flood of wind and rain,
우리를 뿔뿔이 흩어지게, 바람과 비의 폭풍 속으로
And a sea of tidal waves, To wash us all away,
조수의 파도가 넘치는 바다로 우리 전부 쓸려 나가게 했어.

또 우리가 까불면 또 한 번 잘라버릴 거라고
