1977년 발표된 이후 지금까지도 베스트 리퀘스트 곡인
"Hotel California" 를 부른 전설적인 그룹.
1971년 결성된 이글스는 1972년 데뷔앨범을 발표하였고,
이를 골드 레코드로 기록시키며
전 미국을 포함한 세계에 그들의 이름을 알렸습니다.
1976년 트리플 기타리스트 체제로 들어선 그들은
이글스라는 이름에 가장 큰 공헌을 하게 만든
"Hotel California" 를 발표하였고,
이 곡은 그해..
그래미상의 최우수레코드상을 수상하게되었으며,
"Hotel California" 앨범은 8주간
앨범 차트에서 1위를 차지하는등
총 107주간 차트의 상위에 머무르면서
세계적으로 900만장이라는 판매고를 올리게 되고
"Hotel California"는 "돈 펠더,돈 헨리,글렌 프레이" 의
공동작품으로 1977년 2월26일에 빌보드차트에 등장하여
1위까지 오른 이글스의 노래에서 좀처럼 발견할 수 없는
힘있고 예리한 기타연주가 압권입니다.
특히 후반 약 2분 동안 계속되는 기타연주는
"Hotel California"의 백미로 일컬어지고 있습니다.
이것은 후에 이글스의 멤버가 되었던 "조 웰시" 의
영향으로 그들이 추구하는 컨츄리록 사운드를
완벽하게 구사했다는 평을 듣고 있습니다.
이들은 이 노래로 미국그룹에서 세계적인 그룹으로
발돋움했으며 이 노래가 수록된 앨범
"Hotel California"는 이글스의 앨범 중
가장 실속있고 내용있는 작품으로 평가받고 있습니다.
이 곡은 호텔 캘리포니아에 관한 이야기를 소재로 하고 있는데
호텔을 소재로 부른 곡이 대히트를 치다니
사랑이나 미움이니 하는 우리 가요와는 상당히 다른 듯 합니다.
내용도 쉽지는 않지요.
해석은 어느정도 되겠지만 호텔 분위기가 심상치않습니다.
노래가 상당히 길죠, 거의 7분정도 걸립니다.
1976년 그래미상 레코드 부분을 차지했던
이글스 최대의 베스트셀러 음반이자 다섯 번째 음반에
수록된 곡으로 이글스란 밴드를 언급할 때
가장 먼저 떠올리는 곡이기도 합니다.
이 앨범에 대해
"우리가 묘사한 것은 엘레강스와 데카당스 ,
그리고 건국 200년을 맞이한 미국에 대한 언급" 이라고
멤버 자신들이 말한 것처럼,
이 앨범은 전체적으로 캘리포니아에 대한 환상과
더 나아가서는 미국 전체에 대한 퇴폐를 테마로 하고 있습니다.
미국이 주장하는 "아메리칸 드림"이니 "최후의 낙원"등과
같은 말들은 특별한 어느 곳도 아닌
현재 자신들이 살고 있는 "출구 없는 상황"이라는
암울한 현실을 노래 가사에 싣고 있습니다.
