포스트그런지(post-grunge) 밴드 후바스탱크(Hoobastank)는 결성된 지 수년이 지나도록 무명신세를 벗어나지 못하다가, 의외로 포스트 그런지의 열풍이 잦아들 무렵인 2000년대 초반에 대중적 인기를 확보하기 시작한 독특한 이력을 지닌 밴드이다. 특히 국내에서는 2004년, 서태지 주도하에 열린 'ETPfest' 콘서트에 출연함으로써 많은 인지도를 획득한 밴드이기도 하다.
1994 년 캘리포니아에서 보컬리스트 덕 랍(Doug Robb)과 기타리스트 댄 에스트린(Dan Estrin)을 중심으로 결성된 후바스탱크는, 이후 마르쿠 라팔라이넨(Markku Lappalainen. 베이스)과 크리스 헤스(Chris Hesse. 드럼)를 가담시켜 4인조 라인업을 완성하게 된다. 그들의 첫 앨범은 1998년에야, 그나마도 자주제작방식으로 공개될 수 있었는데 그 타이틀은 [They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To]였다. 이 앨범으로 밴드는 캘리포니아 일원에서 나름의 지명도를 확보할 수 있었다.
2000년 드디어 아일랜드(Island) 레이블과 계약한 후바스탱크는, 이후 인큐버스(Incubus), 에일리언 앤트 팜(Alien Ant Farm) 등과 함께 투어를 다니는 등 레이블의 각별한 배려를 받으며 성장하게 된다. 2001년 마침내 대망의 메이저 데뷔앨범 [Hoobastank]를 출반한 밴드는, 수록곡 ‘Crawling In The Dark’의 히트에 힘입어 데뷔앨범으로 골드를 획득하는 행운을 누리게 된다.
2003 년 말에는 이들의 2집 [The Reason]이 공개되었는데, 이 앨범에서는 타이틀트랙 ‘The Reason’이 MTV의 강력한 지지 속에 빌보드 싱글차트 3위에 오르는 대히트를 거두며 전작의 성공을 이어갈 수 있었다. 그리고 그 이듬해에는 ‘ETPfest’ 공연에 참여함으로써 한국 팬들 앞에서 연주할 기회를 갖기도 했다.
