어떤 환상이 자기 씨를 심어 놨기 때문이지

And the vision that planted in my brain

Still remains within the sound of silence

아직 여전히 침묵의 소리로 남아 있다네

In restless dreams I walked alone

불안한 꿈속에서 자갈이 깔린

Narrow streets of cobblestone

좁을 길을 혼자 걸었지

Neath the halo of a street lamp

가로등 불 밑에 다다랐을 때

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

차갑고 음습한 기운에 옷깃을 세웠다네

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a

neon light.   그 때 반짝이는 네온 불빛이 내눈에 들어왔고

That split the night

밤의 어둠을 가르며

And touched the sound of silence

침묵의 소릴 감싸 안았다네

And in the naked light I saw

나는 적나라한 불빛 가운데서

Ten thousand people, maybe more

만명 정도, 아니 어쩌면 더 많은 사람들을 볼 수 있었다네

People talking without speaking

 그 사람들은 맘에도 없는 얘기를 하고

People hearing without listening

듣는 체 하지만 실제론 듣지않고

People writing songs that voices never share

가슴을 울리지도 못하는 노래들을 부르고 있었다네

And no one dare

그 어느 누구도 감히

Didturb the sound of silence

침묵의 소릴 깨들릴 엄두를 내지 못했다네

'Fools'said I, "You do not know

그래서 난 '바보들아', "당신들은 알지 못하나요?

Silence like a cancer grows"

암과 같은 침묵이 자라고 있음을"이라 말했지

Hear my words that I might teach you

당신들을 깨우치는 내 말을 들으세요

Take my arms that I might reach you

당신들에게 내미는 내 손을 잡으세요'라고 말했지

But my words like silent raindrops fell

하지만 그런 내 말은 소리없는 빗방울처럼 떨어져

And echoed in the wells of silence

침묵의 샘 가운데서 공허한 메아리같을 뿐이었다네

And the people bowed and prayed

사람들은 자기들이 만든

To the neon god they made

네온 神에게 허리굽혀 기도했다네

And the sign flashed out its warning

그러자 네온이 만들어 내는 단어 중에

In the worlds that it was forming

경고의 문구가 번쩍였지

And the sign said " The words of the prophets

 네온은 이렇게 말했어"예언자의 말은 지하철의 벽이나

are written on the subway walls and tenement halls"

싸구려 아파트 현관에 적혀있다"라고..

And whisper'd in the sounds of silence

침묵의 소리 가운데에서 그렇게 속삭이더군...
