죽느냐, 사느냐, 이것이 문제로다...

To be or not to be: this is the question:

사느냐, 죽느냐, 이것이 문제로다.

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

참혹한 운명의 화살을 맞고 마음속으로 참아야 하느냐

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

 아니면 성난 파도처럼 밀려오는 고난과 맞서 용감히 싸워

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

그것을 물리쳐야 하느냐. 어느쪽이 더 고귀한 일일까. 

And by opposing end them. To  die, to sleep

남은 것이 오로지 잠자는 일뿐이라면, 죽는 것은 잠자는 것. 

No more and by sleep to say we end,

잠들면서 시름을 잊을수 있다면,

The heartache and the thousand natural shocks

잠들면서 수만가지 인간의 숙명적인 고통을 잊을수 있다면 

That flesh is heir to! 'Tis a consummation

devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep.

그것이야 말로 우리가 진심으로  바라는 최상의 것이로다. 죽는 것은 잠드는 것.

To sleep perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub,

아마도 꾸을 꾸겟지. 아, 그것이 괴롭다.

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come

이 세상 온갖 번민으로부터 벗어나 잠속에서  

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

어떤 꿈을 꿀 것인가를 생각하면 망설여진다.

Must give us pause. There’s the respect 

that makes calamaity of so long life:

이 같은 망설임이 있기에 비참한 인생을 지루하게 살아가는 것인가.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,

그렇지 않으면 이 세상의 채찍과 조롱을,

Th’s oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,

무도한 폭국의 거동을, 우쭐대는 꼴불견들의 치욕을, 

The pangs of despised love, the law’s delay,

 버림받은 사랑의 아픔을, 재판의 지연을,

The insolence of office, and the spurns

관리의 불손을, 선의의 인간들이 악당으로부터 받고 견디는

That patient merit of the unworthy takes

 수많은 모욕을 어찌 참아나갈 수 있단 말인가.

When he himself might his quietus make

 한 자루의 단먹으로 찌르기만 하면,

With a bare bodkin? Who would farthels bear,

이 세상으로부터 벗어말 수 있을 진대 어찌 참아나가야 한단 말인가? 

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,

생활의 고통에 시달리면, 땀범벅이 되어 신음을 하면서도 사후의 한가닥 불안 때문에

But that the dread of something after death,

죽음의 경지를 넘어서 돌아온 자가 한사람도 없기 때문에

The undiscovered country from whose bourn

그 미지의 세계에 대한

No traveler returns, puzzles the will,

불안 때문에 우리들의 결심은 흐려지고,

And makes us rather bear those ills we have

이 세상을 떠나 우리가 알수 없는 고통을 받기보다는 

Than fly to others that we know not of?

 이 세상에 남아서 그 괴로움을 참고 견디려 한다.
