This is an instrument that two long wooden sticks (Gwae) are vertically fixed on a trapezoid wooden ringing box (Ullimtong). Fourteen sets of four iron strings are laid across on those wooden sticks. If a player strikes the strings with a thinly cut bamboo stick (Chae), a clear metallic sound is produced. This instrument is called Guracheolsageum or Yanggeum in Korea.
In accordance with Musical Instrument Classification, Yanggeum belongs to Chordophone. Meanwhile, according to the Korean traditional instrument classification, it belongs to Sabu.
Its box-shaped body is made of paulownia, while strings of the alloy of tin and iron. When it needs to be kept for a period of time, it is covered with a lid for the protection of strings, which is laid under the body while playing. For tuning, a curved iron piece (Gokcheol) is used.
