The djembe (pronounced "JEM-bay") drum is a member of the membranophone family of musical instruments: a frame covered by an animal skin. The djembe has its origin in the ancient Empire of Mali, which ruled West Africa from the 14th to 16th centuries.
Djembe(젬베)는 타악기 분류로는 멤브라폰에 속한다. 멤브라폰(Membranophones)이란 공명 통에 팽팽히 조여진 막이나 가죽을 떨리게 하여 소리내는 악기들을 뜻한다. 몸체는 나무로 만들며, 모래시계유리 모양을 하고 있고, 윗부분에 동물의 가죽을 씌워서 만들었다. 그 기원은 14세기에서 16세기 서아프리카를 지배한 고대 말리 제국 때 부터 유래되었다고 한다.
The empire was founded by the Mandingo people – a West African ethnic group (or tribe), also known as the Mandinka, Maninka, Mandé, Mandingue, Malinké, or Soninke, depending on the region.
말리 제국은, 만딩카, 마닌카, 만데, 만딩고, 말린케, 소닌케 등으로 알려진 서아프리카의 만딩고족이 세웠는데, 만딩고족은 서아프리카 전역에 걸쳐 생활하고 만데어를 사용하며, 방언에 따라서는 말린케, 밤바라, 디우라 3 집단으로 나뉜다.

The djembe drum is hand-carved from a solid piece of wood in an hour-glass shape - drums made from segments of wood glued together are considered by Africans to have no soul of the tree. A skin – typically goat, and more rarely antelope, zebra, deer or calf - is stretched over the top to create the drumhead. Iron rods and synthetic rope (originally materials like sinew and cane would have been used) are tightened precisely to tune the drum.
젬베는, -아래 위를 붙여서 만들지 않고-통나무를 쪼아서 모래시계 모양으로 만들고, 가죽은 일반적으로 염소가죽-드물게는 영양, 얼룩말, 사슴, 송아지 가죽-을 쓰며, 윗 부분에 가죽을 씌워서, 쇠로 된 둥근 링과 로프를 이용하여 가죽을 팽팽하게 조여서 음을 정확히 맞춘다. 전통적으로는, 동물의 힘줄이나 나무의 줄기를 로프의 소재로 사용해 왔었다.
The djembe is played with bare hands. There is a wide range of sounds that can be produced on the djembe. Hitting the drumhead in the center produces the “Bass” note; while hitting the skin along the edge creates the “Tone” (fingers together) or the “Slap” (fingers apart). Things like the carving and density of the wood, and the quality and tightness of the skin will affect the sound.
젬베는 맨손으로 연주하는데, 그 음역이 아주 넓다. 드럼헤드(가죽부분)의 중앙을 치면 낮은소리(bass)가 나고, 손가락 전체로 가장자리를 치면 기본적인 소리(tone)가 나고, 손가락끝으로 가장자리를 치면 높은 소리(slap)가 난다. 나무의 밀도와 쪼아놓은 상태(전체적인) 그리고 가죽의 질의 상태와 텐션(tension), 이런 요소들이 전체적으로 젬베 소리에 영향을 미친다.
Traditionally, the djembe is 12" - 16”(30cm-41cm) in diameter, but can be found in sizes from 5" (13cm) up to 18" (46cm).
전통적으로, 젬베는 윗부분의 지름이 12"~16"정도이며, 5"~18"인 것도 있다.
The djembe drum is said to contain 3 spirits - The spirit of the tree, the spirit of the animal of which the drumhead is made and the spirit of the instrument maker. The djembe is considered by many as a healing drum, and by others as a magical drum with powers to transport people into other worlds.
젬베는 3가지 정신(영혼)이 있다고한다. 몸통을 제공하는 나무와, 가죽을 울려주는 동물과, 악기를 만드는 사람!!
