춤의 대한 열정이 남다른 사라는 줄리어드 댄스 스쿨을 목표로 구슬땀을 흘려왔다 그러나 오디션 당일 가게 일이 바쁜 엄마는 제 시간에 도착하지 못하고 사라는 혼자 시험장에 들어간다 서두르던 엄마는 그만 사고로 세상을 떠나고 사라는 그 이후 춤을 포기하고 절망에 빠진다. 아버지가 사는 시카고의 빈민지역으로 들어간 사라. 흑인이 거의 전부인 학교에서 고집 센 데릭이라는 남학생과 인상적인 만남을 갖는다. 데릭의 여동생 슈닐은 사랑와 친구가 돼 주고, 데릭과 슈닐의 손에 이끌려 사라는 클럽에 가게 된다. 사라가 춤에 대한 열정을 숨기고 있음을 안 데릭은 그녀에게 힙합 댄스를 가르쳐주겠다고 하는데.
