22. Party!
So my massage therapist (and personal trainer) Mee-Ra invited me and some of my friends to a party. Her and her roommate used to have these parties are their apartment... a kind of jam-session. But the party outgrew their apartment and so this time it was held at a French restaurant near their home in Seoul.
It was an awesome party, so much fun. It was kind of like a concert, but much more intimate, and varied... really cool. I mostly took videos, which I will include in this post, but I'll begin with a few pictures.
These first two pictures are of Joung-Ju, who is Mee-Ra's roommate. Her band (E'Joung-Ju) were the first act of the night. The instrument she's playing is called the Geomungo -- I'm afraid I can't claim to be very informed about this, I'm totally just reading it off of her CD, which I bought last night. In reading the CD jacket, I have learned that geomungo "has 16 fixed frets and 3 movable brides; it has six strings... the Chinese seven stringed ch'in was brought to Goguryeo by a man from the Ch'in. Although the Goguryeo people recognized it as a musical instrument, they did not know how to play it. The king offered a prize to anyone who could play it. Minister Wang San-Ak arrived at a solution by remodeling the structure of the Chinese ch'in. He also composed some one hundred pieces. When the inventor of the geomungo, Wang San-Ak, played one of his compositions, a black crane danced to his music... Later the middle syllable hak was omitted and it became the hyon gum or "Black Zither".
Anyway, now that I sound all smart and stuff, here's 2 pictures of Joung-Ju playing the watchamacallit... just kidding, the Geomungo.
There was also a traditional Korean dance, which was really cool. The dance actually went on for about 14 minutes, which is 4 minutes longer than I can put in a video clip to show you guys, so I'm afraid the movie of her is cut a bit short, but the pictures sure are beautiful!
