The Road Not Taken

2007년 1월 11일.

방금 전.

여느때와 같이 립밤을 바르다가 갑자기 이런 생각이 들었습니다.

왜 내 립밤은 항상 같은 모양으로 되어버리는 걸까?

그러고보니 내 구두도 항상 같은 쪽만 먼저 닳고,

잠을 잘 때도 어떤 특정 자세를 했을 때 가장 잠이 잘 오는 것 같기도 하네요.

오랫동안 같은 방식으로만 행해와서 너무나도 익숙해져 버린,

그래서 가장 편하게 느껴지는 일들이 참 많습니다.

제가 좋아하는 글 중에 미국의 시인 로버트 프로스트(Robert Frost)의 The Road Not Taken이라는 글이 있습니다.

이 글을 읽을 때마다 나에게 있어서 가지 않은 길은 무엇일까? 그리고, 내가 가지 않았던 길로 들어설 용기를 잃지 말자. 는 결심을 하게 됩니다.

그 동안 하지 않았던 일 한 가지를 해 보는 용기 있는 하루 되시길 기원합니다.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
