This is a book about Korea, written by a non-Korean, a Dutch-U.S. dual citizen, and a graduate of both American and Russian universities. It is written for Koreans, curious about how a Westerner views them and their country, and for non-Koreans, intrigued with Korea and its people. This book is an attempt to put the weakness in context of the larger, positive whole. It will talk about the good and the beautiful of Koreans and the bad and the ugly. There are four main sections. These deal with the family, education, natural identity, and the interrelation of art and society. Maarten Meijer, the author of this book, spent his childhood years in the Netherlands. After completing his education and traveling extensively, he received a bachelor's degree in science and a master's degree in theology at the State University of New York and a Ph. D. in Russian literature from Moscow State University. In Russia, the family befriended Russian Koreans and Korean natives, and this ultimately inspired a move to Korea in 2000. He taught English at a Seoul university for several years. From 2006, he will teach religion at a private school, continuing his activities as an author and a social critic. He hopes that Western readers who share some of his love for Korea will benefit from his insights and will be able to deepen their relationships with Koreans, and intensify their involvement in Korean society. He also wishes that those expatriates who do not like Korea much or are just too confused or overwhelmed by it and its very active people will discover how beautiful the country is and how wonderful the people can be.
이 책을 읽지 못했지만, 외국인 입장에선 이런 책으로 한국에 대한 애정을 보여주기만 하면 한국에선 유명인사가 된다. 영어민으로 태어나면, 영어선생으로 쉽게 돈을 벌 수 있고, (백인인 이상) 이쁨 받으며 살 수 있는 곳이 한국이기도 하다. 한국의 대학들도 영어 강의 붐을 이루면서, 외국인 교수를 선호하고 있고.
이렇듯 대우받는 백인 입장에서 이 글을 쓴 네덜란드인은 한국에 대한 시선이 따뜻했을 것이다. 경험에 비춰봐, 미국의 백인 촌의 백인하고는 비교 안될 만큼, 한국에 나와있는 백인들 (주로 영어 선생님들)은 한국에 대한 시선이 따뜻하다. 도움이 될 때만 유득히 친해질 수 있는 백인들 특성 때문일거 라고 본다만.
하긴, 김대중 노무현 정부의 imf이후 시기의 부의 지나친 집중이 부른, 극한 속물 주의나 시기 질투가 없었다면, 한국은 정많고 살가운 나라였다. 특히나, 내가 미국으로 가기전 2001년하고 지금의 한국을 비교해 보면, 정말이지 소수의 부동산 부자들을 위한 나라로 변모해 버렸다. 잠깐 추종했던 노무현 정부의 처절한 실정 때문이지, 내가 부족해서 잘은 모르겠으나.
식민지를 거친면서 친일파가 권력을 잡고, 한국 전쟁 후엔 오로지 미국 추종의 사회를 살면서, 고유의 5000년 문화와 정신을 잃어 버린게 정말이지 아쉽다. 우리의 founding fathers는 자기 노예를 몰래 해방시켜주는 조지 와싱턴도 아니었고, 스스로를 낮추며 살았던 링컨도 아니었고, 조국을 사랑하고 인류애를 주창했던 김구는 암살당했으니...
하지만, 가장 가난한 나라에서 11대 경제 대국으로 성장했고, 스포츠에서 놀라운 집중력을 보여주고, 아이들은 (로보트로 성장하지만 않는다면) 굉장히 똑똑하고, (이미 많이 망가졌지만) 자연은 지극히 아름답고, (남과 북이 나뉘었지만) 가장 큰 아시아 대륙과도 통하고 가장 큰 태평양과도 통할 뻔 한 나라였다. 미모 숭상하느라 누구나 쌍꺼풀 수술을 하려들고, 미국 따라 아이들 대부분이 (유대교의 의식인) 포경 수술 받고, 점집과 IT의 최전전이 공존하는 묘하고도 흥미로운 장소다. 어디서 이런 경험을 하겠나?
좋은 리더가 있고, 열정을 쏟을 대상만 있다면 얼마든지 더 성장할 것 같은 나라이지만.... 그렇지 못하면, 더럽고 복잡하고 투기꾼많고 사람차별하는 나쁜 나라로 남을지도. 이러다간, 의사 변호사 부동산 투기꾼만 남아서 살게 되는 상상을 해본다 ^.^;;;
그러고 보니, 한국에 온 미국애들좀 만나서 한국 어떻게 생각하는지 좀 진지하게 물어봐야겠다.
