I respectfully express my condolence as a representative of Korean assemblymen to bereaved families about mass murder at the Virginia Tech.
When I heard, "33 people are dead after shooting in the campus area which is supposed to be an academic area,” the only thing I can do was to pray for them.
There is no time to blame on myself who can do nothing but pray for them. Moreover, I was so ashamed that my whole body stiffened since the murderer was identified as a Korean who has lived in the United States.
I express my regret to bereaved families who are in grief. In addition, as a representative of Korean Assemblymen, I want to share their sense of bereavement with the people all over the world who feel sad for the horrible tragedy.
I also sincerely hope that this accident is not going to provoke criticism for a specific country and its people. I wish from my heart that this accident will not negatively affect Korean residents in America, who have endeavored to realize their dreams, and Korean students studying in America, who have been struggling on their academic pursuit.
Moreover, I am sincerely asking the governments and people all over the world not to affect the relationships between South Korea and your countries. Please give Korean people, who have done their best throughout the world, cooperation in order that they do not have to feel small in your presence.
Again, I respectfully express my condolence to bereaved families, who are shedding grief tears, and young souls, who do not even have a chance to realize their dreams in this life.

한국의 국회의원을 대표해 삼가조의를 표합니다.
“미국 역사상 최악의 총기참사로 33명이 사망했다, 그것도 사건이 학문의 장이라는 대학구내에서 일어났다”는 소식을 접했을 때, 제가 할 수 있는 일은 눈을 감고 “하나님, 어찌하여 어린 영혼을 이리도 빨리 주의 곁으로 부르시나이까” 하는 기도밖엔 없었습니다.
현지에 계신 피해자 유가족들과 한인동포 여러분을 위해 기도밖에 아무것도 할 수 없는 제 자신을 탓할 겨를도 없이, 사건의 가해자가 미국에 거주하는 우리교포로 밝혀짐에 따라 저는 마치 온 몸이 굳어 버리는 것과 같은 극한 당혹감과 혼란을 느끼고 말았습니다.
저는 우선 아직도 두려움과 슬픔에 떨고 계실 피해자 유가족 여러분과 한인동포 여러분께 유감을 표하는 바입니다. 그리고 나아가 이 사건을 보며, 눈물 흘리고 안타까워하고 계실 세계 모든 국가의 국민 여러분과 대한민국의 국회의원을 대표해 진심으로 애도의 마음을 함께 하고자 합니다.
그리고, 이번 사건이 특정 인종과 국가에 대한 비난으로 이어지지 않기를 간절히 소망합니다. 꿈을 이루기 위해 저 멀리 해외에서 밤낮없이 심히 땀 흘리며 노력하고 계시는 선의의 교포 여러분과 아무것도 모른 채 공부에 매진하고 있을 우리 선량한 대한민국 유학생 여러분께 이번과 같은 불미스러운 사태로 인한 피해가 전달되지 않기를 진심으로 소망합니다.
나아가 미국을 비롯한 전 세계 여러 국가의 정부와 국민여러분에게 간절히 부탁드립니다. 이번 사태가 대한민국 정부와 전 세계 국가 간의 우호적인 관계에 부정적 부분으로 작용하지 않기를 기대합니다. 지구촌 시대를 살며 ‘세계는 하나’라는 정신으로 세계 이 곳 저곳에서 맡은 바 일에 최선을 다하고 있을 대한민국 국민들이 주눅 들거나 위축되지 않도록 적극적인 협조를 다시 한번 진심으로 부탁드립니다.
