As we all know love comes with a price, as anyhting else in life. As we let people come closer into our lives, we leave ourselves vulnerable to heartbreak. However, this movie touches upon the point that it is love's imperfections that make love valuable.
The director wants to audience to understand, which is:
"Love is something that should not be erased."
Because if we were to erase every bad memories that we have, then in the end we would lose who we really are.
As the story progresses, we see that bitter and cold memories of their love, turn into memories that Joel wants to keep, which are memories of love, compassion and innocence.
It is the collection of memories that define us as individuals...even if memories were painful, we should treasure it just as much as good ones.
