1. You are not yellow, are you? (당신은 겁쟁이가 아니죠?)

-> 여기서 yellow는 '겁이 많은' 이란 뜻임

-> 비슷한 표현 : timid, yellow-bellied

-> 겁을 먹다, 주눅 들다는 표현은 chicken out, have cold feet

예문) I usually get cold feet when I have to speak in public. (사람들앞에서 말해야 할때는 너무 떨린다.)

         Don't be chicken out of that! (두려워 도망치지 마!)

 

2. We're open 24/7/365. (우리는 일년 365일 주7일 하루24시간 영업합니다.)

-> 원래 표현은 We're open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year.

-> 보통 365를 빼고 24/7로 더 많이 쓰임

예문) A: Why don't we go see a movie this Saturday?

         B: I can't. I have to work this Saturday.

         A: You seem to work 24-7. (너는 노는 날도 없는 것 같구나.)

 

3. My phone is out of order. (집전화가 고장났어요.)

-> 상세한 표현 : I don't get a dial tone. (발신음이 들리지 않아요.)

-> 상세한 표현 : Our phone has a lot of static. ( 우리집 전화에 잡음이 많아요.)

 

4. I still use my old film camera. (아직도 필름 카메라를 사용하고 있습니다.)

-> 필름을 살 때 I need a roll of film. (필름 한통 주세요.)

 

5. She is a nagging wife. (그 여자는 바가지를 잘 긁는 아내다.)

-> 비슷한 표현 : She henpecks her husband all the time. (그녀는 남편을 항상 들볶는다.)

-> henpeck은 암탉(hen)이 부리로 쪼다(peck)는 뜻이므로 사람을  들볶다는 의미임

 

6. You can't puff away here, sir. (여기서 담배를 피울 수 없습니다.)

-> 같은 표현 : smoke, light up, puff away

예문) At a restaurant

          A: I'm sorry but you can't light up here, sir.

          B: Oh, really? Where can I puff away then?

          A: You have to go out, sir.

 

7. Once bitten, twice shy. (한번 물리면 두번 조심한다.)

-> 어떤 나쁜 일을 한번 당하면 두번 다시 당하지 않으려고 더 조심하게 된다는 의미임

-> 비슷한 표현 : never buy a pig  in a poke (자루속에 든 돼지는 절대로 사지 않는다. 즉, 물건을 보지않고는 안산다.)

예문) A: Have you ever shopped online?

         B: No. I never buy anything sight unseen.

         A: Aha, you are one of those people who never buy a pig in a poke, are't you?

         B: Yes, I am.

 

8. Do you get airsick? (비행기 멀미하나요?)

-> airsickness 비행기멀미, carsickness 차멀미, seasickness 배멀미

예문) A: Hey, I'm really nervous about flying in a plane tomorrow.

         B: Why? Do you get airsick or something?

         A: Yeah, Last time I got on a plane, I was vomitting the whole time.

         B: Just try to sleep at night and eat light. Then you'll be fine.

 

9. Oh, my God! What's this world coming to? (맙소사,이놈의 세상이 어떻게 되려고 이러지. 말세야.)

예문) A: A five-year-old kindergarten boy was arrested in Tennessee for bringing a loaded

              pistol to school because he wanted to kill his female teacher!

         B: Oh, my God! What's this world coming to?

 

10. It's beyond me. (도저히 이해가 안간다.)

-> 같은 표현 : I don't understand. It's over my head.

예문) A: I don't understand why she dumped her boyfriend and married a much older uglier guy.

         B: It's beyond me, too.
