1980년대 후반 헤비 메탈과 로큰롤의 대명사로 불려졌던 Guns N' Roses는 1985년 보컬에 Axl Rose, 기타에 Slash, Izzy Stradlin 베이스에 Duff "Rose" McKagan, 드럼에 Steven Adler의 라인업으로 LA에서 결성되었다. 그 후 클럽에서 데뷔 무대를 가진후 LA와 그 인근 지역을 돌며 무명 생활을 하다 1986년 데뷔 EP [Live?! Like A Suicide] 를 발표하고, 이듬해인 1986년 첫번째 데뷔 앨범 [Appetite for Destruction] 을 내놓는다.
이들의 데뷔 앨범이 성공을 거두기 시작한 것은 MTV에서 'Sweet Child O' Mine' 을 방영하기 시작하면서 부터이다. 섹스, 약물 등을 다룬 가사와 마초적인 분위기는 팬들을 매료시키기에 충분했다. 뮤직비디오 방영 이후 그들의 인기는 승승장구 하였고, 앨범 발매 1년만에 빌보드 앨범차트 1위에 랭크되기도 했다.
예정보다 반 년이나 지연된 끝에 1991년에 발매된 앨범 [Use Your Illusion I] 과 [Use Your Illusion II] 도 예상대로 상업적으로 큰 성공을 거두었다. 하지만 90년대 초반 Nirvana을 필두로 한 Alternative Rock 음악이 주류를 이루게 되면서, 헤비 메탈은 몰락의 길을 걷게 되었고 Guns N' Roses도 위기를 맞게 되었다. 엎친데 덮친 격으로 Axl Rose와 Slash 사이의 주도권 다툼으로 팀 내부에 균열이 오고 Izzy Stradlin 마저 팀을 탈퇴하면서 Guns N' Roses는 '공식 해체' 만 없을 뿐이지 사실상 해체를 맞게 된다. [The Spaghetti Incident ('93)] 이후 현재까지 그들의 신보는 나오지 않고 있다.
하지만 카리스마 가득한 보컬 Axl Rose와 독특한 개성으로 많은 인기를 얻었던 두 기타리스트 Slash 와 Izzy Stradlin의 강한 이미지! 그리고 옐로우 페이퍼들을 즐겁게 했던 숱한 사건들과 염문들로 화제를 몰고 다녔던 이들이 완전히 사라지는 것은 아니다. Axl Rose가 새 멤버들을 꾸려 Guns N' Roses의 신작을 준비하고 있으며, 다른 멤버들도 앨범 세션으로 꾸준한 활동을 보이고 있다. 2004년에는 베스트 앨범 [Greatest Hits] 를 발매하기도 하였다.
