세계를 놀라게 한 ‘줄기세포’ 연구로 노벨상 수상 가능성을 묻는 패널의 질문에 대해 황 교수는,
“노벨상을 받으려면 어떻게 해야 하는지 저는 전혀 모릅니다. 노벨상이 저의 목표도 아닙니다. 저는 만약 역사에 한 줄 기록이 된다면 ‘참 과학도였다’는 기록이 어느 가치보다 소중한 재산으로 남을 것입니다.” (2005년 6월7일 관훈토론회)
그런데 어덜트스템셀(성체줄기세포)은 3-4 계대 지나면 이게 노화가 되거나 2배체 정상염색체가 4배체 암세포로 바뀌는 겁니다. (황우석 교수는 동명정보대 강연에서는 10계대를 넘기지 못하고 이런 현상이 나타난다고 말했음)
못 쓰는 겁니다. 못 쓰는 거예요. 못 쓰는 걸 못 쓰는 걸로 얘기해야 하는데 이런 말 할 수 있는 자유가 대한민국에 없어요. 왜냐?
대한민국은 헌법 위에 '떼법(카르텔 권력을 의미하는 것으로 추정)'이 존재하는 나라이기 때문에 이런 거 말하면 골로 간다. 자꾸 하지 말라 그래요. 주위에서 말려요.
그러나 여러분!
학자가 진실을 이야기하지 못할 때 그건 진실된 사회가 아닙니다.
못 쓰는 겁니다. 저거 해결이 되요, 언제 되는 것이냐? 40-50년 후면 됩니다. 지금의 과학기술 추세로 봤을 때... 그러나 강원래 군에게 "당신 몸에서 꺼낸 줄기세포로 50년 후에 우리가 일으켜 세워 줄께"했다가는 귀싸대기 맞는다고요. 지금 장난치는 거냐구? 못 쓰는 거지요.
