Like everything in Korea, change happens quickly. A few short days ago,
spring was just a hint of green and a small splash of color in a dry brown
world still held tight in winter's powerful embrace. Now...? Everything is in
bloom, the days are getting warmer and warmer, people are smiling, cleaning,
and anticipating what comes next.
Each transition from one season to the next is a time of change, but winter's
transformation into spring is perhaps the one which has the strongest effect
on the greatest number of people. Like butterflies emerging from thick, ugly
cocoons, people shed their winter clothing, and garb themselves in bright colors
to greet the return of greenery, blossoms, and warmer temperatures. This
kind of outward transformation can often have an inward effect as well. A change
in our appearance can spark a change of mood or direction, almost like being
reborn.
We associate spring with new romance, renewal of purpose, the return of life from
winter's cruel grip, and here in Asia, we associate it with getting ready to complete
the first semester of the school year. While some of us associate academics with
'a cruel grip,' others among us see learning as an opportunity to empower ourselves and seize greater control of choices and changes we can make in our lives.
This is a time of significant change here at Shinchon 1:1, not just for me in my new
role as the Academic Director for the center, but also because we are looking at each
step of how we do things and are looking for ways to make them better. It is time for
us to renew ourselves and explore new ways of helping each of our students empower
themselves for the changes which await them.
Do you have any suggestions for how we can alter or improve things here?
