Ukrainian women students have stripped down to their bikinis and bathed in the fountains of Kiev's central square in a protest against the city authorities' annual hot water switch-off.
우크라이나 여학생들이 옷을 벗어던진 뒤 비키니 차림으로 키예프 중앙 광장 분수에서 목욕을 했다. 매년 시 당국이 온수 공급을 중단하는 것에 항의하기 위해서다.
Members of the women's student group 'Femen' brought their dirty washing to Independence Square in the Ukrainian capital on Thursday (June 11).
Some scrubbed bedlinen and clothes in the fountain while others held banners bearing their protest slogan "No hot water in the taps so we're washing in the square."
여학생 단체 ‘피멘(Femen)’ 회원들은 11일(현지시간) 우크라이나의 수도 키예프의 독립광장에 빨랫감을 들고 모였다.
일부 여학생들은 분수에서 침구류를 비벼 빨았다. 다른 여학생들은 “온수가 나오지 않는다. 그래서 광장에서 씻고 있다”라고 적힌 현수막을 들고 있었다.
"We are staging this demonstration because there is no water in our taps and so we are doing our washing here in the square," said 17-year-old Anya, who starts her university studies this autumn.
"Because there is no hot water in the taps there is nowhere to wash ourselves, wash our clothes and do our ablutions in the morning - so we're washing in the square," said Anya.
“수도꼭지에서 따뜻한 물이 나오지 않기 때문에 이런 시위를 하고 있는 겁니다. 그래서 광장에 있는 분수대에서 빨래를 하고 있는 거예요. 온수가 나오지 않아 씻고, 빨래하고, 아침에 목욕을 할 곳이 없습니다. 그래서 광장에서 하고 있는 겁니다.”올 가을에 대학생활을 시작하는 안야(17세)의 말이다.
Each summer city authorities across Ukraine turn off domestic hot water supplies, an annual hardship which citizens are told is for plumbing maintenance.
매년 여름 우크라이나 전역의 모든 도시 당국은 가정으로 가는 온수의 공급을 중단하고 있어, 시민들은 매년 이러한 어려움을 겪고 있다. 당국은 수도관 유지보수 작업 때문에 온수 공급을 중단하는 거라고 시민들에게 설명한다.
The younger generation in Ukraine question the need to prolong this Soviet-era civic practice.
"Every summer they turn off the hot water, I don't think politicians or rich people would put up with this," said 19 year-old Alina, a student at Kiev's University of Culture and Art.
"For me personally its a big discomfort, every time, every summer I have to find somewhere else where I can have a bath, I can't understand why they turn off the hot water in Ukraine. I often visit Russia and other countries and it doesn't happen there," she added.
우크라이나의 젊은 세대들은 구소련 시대의 관습을 이어갈 필요가 있냐고 묻는다.
“매년 여름이면 당국이 온수 공급을 중단해요. 전 정치인이나 부유층들이 온수 공급을 잘 참고 견딜 거라고 생각하지 않습니다”라고 키예프 문화예술 대학교의 학생인 알리나(19세)가 말했다.
“개인적으로는 아주 불편해요. 매년 여름이면 목욕할 수 있는 곳을 찾아다녀야 합니다. 우크라이나에서 왜 온수 공급을 중단하는지 이해할 수가 없습니다. 저는 러시아나 다른 국가들을 자주 가곤 하는데, 그곳에서는 이런 일이 없어요.”
The annual hot water switch-off is still widespread in countries of the former Soviet Union, usually planned to coincide with the exodus of holidaymakers from the city to the countryside or the beach.
온수 공급 중단은 옛 소비에트 연방에서 분리 독립한 국가들에겐 여전히 흔한 일이다. 온수 공급 중단 시기는 보통 도시에 사는 사람들이 시골이나 해변으로 여행을 가는 시기와 일치하도록 정해진다.
For the scantily-clad protesters jumping about in the Independence Square fountains it was perhaps the best place to be in Kiev on a sizzling summer day of 31 degrees Celsius.
과감한 옷차림의 시위자들은 독립광장 분수 이곳저곳을 뛰어다녔다. 아마도 키예프에서 섭씨 31도의 찌는 듯한 여름 날씨를 견디기에는 이곳이 최적의 장소인 듯하다.
