멤버들의 강한 개성으로 인해 바람잘 날 없는 그룹이지만, 3집 「딥 퍼플」은 1968.12-69.1월까지
드 레인 리어 스튜디오에서 녹음되었는데, 로드 에반스가 보컬이던 1기의 Deep Purple은 1집부터 3집을 모두 68년 한해에 발표하게 된다.
이렇게 빠른 속도로 3매의 앨범을 한해동안에 발표했음에도 불구하고 완벽한 작품세계를 구축하고 있음은
지금까지도 록계의 불가사의로 남아있다.
3집의 백미는 [April]임에 틀림없다. 비발디의 4계를 연상케하는 이 곡은 3부 구성의 협주곡으로 이후 로열 필과의 협연에서 프롤로그로 사용된다. [4월]은 레드 제플린의 [Stairway To Heaven], 킹 크림슨의 [Epitaph]과 함께 `3대 록 클래식'으로 꼽힌다. 3집을 끝으로 로드 에반스와 닉 심퍼가 탈퇴하여
제1기 딥 퍼플은 막을 내렸다.
