BEIJING, China -- Chinese authorities have found 28 baby girls packed into nylon suitcases on a bus in southern China.
중국 남부지방의 한 버스에 실려있던 나일론 옷가방에서 28명의 여자 아기들을 발견했다고 중국 관계당국이 밝혔다.
외국으로 몰래 팔아넘겨질 뻔한 이 아기들은 지난달 17일(이하 현지시각)버스가 광시성 남부 빈양시에 정차했을 때 발견됐다고 중국 언론은 전했다.
AP통신은 이 마을의 교통경찰을 통해 이 아기들이 발견됐다는 사실을 확인했다고 보도했다.
이 아기들은 모두 생후 3개월 미만이며 그 중 한 아이는 숨진 채로 발견됐다고 베이징 모닝 뉴스는 보도했다.
당국은 이 아이들이 어디에서 왔는지 어디로 가고 있었는지 알 수 없다고 밝혔지만 베이징 모닝 뉴스는 이 아기들이 외국으로 몰래 팔아 넘기기 위한 아이들이라고 보도했다. 이들의 가족이라고 나선 사람은 아직 없는 상태다.
광시성 교외의 율린에서 출발한 문제의 장거리 버스는 동부의 안휘성으로 가는 중이었다.
중국의 시골에서는 부모들과 농장에서 일할 수 있고 부모를 봉양하며 대를 이을 수 있다는 이유로 남자 아이가 여자 아이보다 선호되고 있다.
당국자는 중국에서 해마다 수많은 아이들이 유괴되어 아이가 없는 가정에 팔려 나가고 있다고 말했다.
홍콩의 서쪽, 중국 남부 해안가에 자리잡은 광시성은 중국에서 가장 빈곤한 지역들 중 한 곳이다.

The girls were apparently being smuggled for sale and were found when the bus stopped at the town of Binyang in the southern province of Guangxi on Monday, Chinese media report.
A traffic police officer in the town confirmed to the Associated Press the discovery of the babies.
One girl died after the babies, all under three months old, were found, the Beijing Morning News reported.
The newspaper said the babies were being smuggled for sale though authorities did not know where they had come from or where they were headed. No relatives are yet to claim the children.
The long distance bus originated in Yulin, a rural region of Guangxi and was bound for the eastern province of Anhui.
In parts of rural China, boys are favored over girls with more value placed on males that can carry on the family name, work on fields and farms and care for parents.
An unknown number of children are abducted every year throughout China, to be sold to childless families, authorities say.
Guangxi, on China's southern coast west of Hong Kong, is one of the country's poorest areas.
