영국 과학자들이 미끄러운 표면에서 자유롭게 다니고 천장도 손쉽게 오르내리게 해주는 '도마뱀(게코)테이프'를 개발했다고 파이낸셜타임스(FT)가 2일 보도했다.
이 기술은 창문닦이나 등산가들이 영화속의 스파이더맨처럼 장갑을 끼고 건물이나 암벽을 손쉽게 오를 수 있게 해 줄 수 있다.
맨체스터대학 연구팀은 도마뱀의 일종인 도마뱀붙이의 발바닥에 나 있는 수백만개의 미소 털이 표면 접착력을 높여준다는 UC버클리의 최근 연구에 근거해 이 테이프를 개발했다.
러시아 연구원들과 공동작업중인 맨체스터 연구팀은 플라스틱 섬유를 사용하는 미세섬유 기술을 사용해 도마뱀의 털을 대체하는데 성공했다.
이들은 도마뱀테이프의 접착 강도를 시험하기 위해 대형 스파이더맨 인형의 손바닥에 이 테이프를 붙여 천장에 다는 작업을 반복했다.
UC버클리의 밥 풀은 "이 테이프의 용도는 거의 무한대"라며 "진공상태에서 반도체를 옮기거나, 작은 섬유조직을 집고, 새로운 붕대를 만드는데도 활용될 수 있다"고 말했다.
2일 과학잡지인 내처럴 머티리얼에 소개된 이번 연구에 따르면 사람이 손바닥에 '도마뱀테이프'를 부착하면 평균 수준의 사람 체중을 견딜 수 있는 부착력을 갖게 된다.
연구원들은 이 테이프가 상업화되기 위해서는 기술과 생산공정에서 더 진전이 있어야 한다고 밝혔다. 스파이더맨이 되기 위해서는 몇 년은 더 기다려야 할 것 같다.

Scientists at Manchester University have invented a "gecko tape" that mimics the ability of lizards to run up smooth surfaces and walk upside down on ceilings.
The technology might eventually enable people to climb buildings and rock faces equipped with Spiderman-style gloves.
The team from Manchester University built on recent research at the University of California, Berkeley, which showed how millions of microscopic hairs on geckos' footpads enable the lizards to stick to surfaces.
The UK scientists, working with Russian colleagues, used microfabrication techniques to make a synthetic version - "gecko tape" - with tiny plastic fibres instead of the hairs that cover the lizards' feet. To illustrate its strength, they attached a large Spiderman toy to the laboratory ceiling with a patch of gecko tape on its hand.
Bob Full of UC Berkeley said: "Uses for the tape are almost unlimited. It could move computer chips in a vacuum, pick up small fibres and design novel bandages. It is like Velcro without the need for an opposite." The research, published today in the journal Nature Materials, shows that an average-sized person could be supported by gecko-taped palms.
But with more development required, would-be Spidermen have a long wait before gecko tape reaches the shops.
