I'm an American citizen living in the United States of America. I became a citizen a couple of years ago- before that I was merely an immigrant from Germany. I have never physically been to Korea. 나는 미국에서 사는 미국 시민입니다. 미국 시민이 된지는 몇 년 되지 않았습니다- 그 전에는 독일에서 온 이민자였을 뿐입니다. 난 한번도 한국에 가본적은 없습니다.
USA is a very multicultural country. You step into a high school and usually a quarter of the population belongs to or is of Asian/oriental cultures. Most non-Asians are not Native Americans either. Living in somewhere like Los Angeles, I cannot help but to be surrounded by Koreans frequently. I myself is not a Korean, but I have always had respect for Korean’s patriot and loyalty to their country, and their unity and oneness. 미국은 정말 다문화적인 나라입니다. 일반 고등학교에 들어간다면 주로 사분의 일의 인구는 동양인입니다. 왠만한 서양인들도 미국에서 태어나지 않았습니다. 로스엔젤레스 같은 곳에 사는 나는 한국사람들 사이에서 살 수 밖에 없습니다. 난 한국사람은 아니지만, 언제나 한국인들의 애국심과 조국에대한 충실함, 그리고 통일됨과 단일됨을 경의했습니다.
I am found highly disappointed, almost outraged at the recent situation of Jay Park (2PM). Being surrounded by Korean friends almost always, I was introduced to the Korean culture- including its food, its traditions, and most prominently, its entertainment (duh, High school students.) 그런 난 이번 박재범(2PM) 사건에 대해 거의 화가 날 정도로 크게 실망을 했습니다. 한국 친구들 사이에 있던 나는 한국의 문화에 대해 많이 알게 되었습니다- 한국의 음식, 전통, 하지만 그것보다 더 연예가에 대해서 말입니다 (고등학생인데, 뻔하지요.)
Koreans living in Korea probably may not know, but those living outside of Korea definitely know. The world outside of Korea also pays a close attention to the entertainment news of the country. I’ve seen people learn how to speak fluently in Korean just by watching dramas, memorize everybody’s names and learn how to spell them, fly to Korea every year just to go to concerts, and watching Speed Racer (which hella sucked, honestly) multiple times just so that Rain could profit. They’re not even a bit Korean, and they’re so supportive. I also remember shaking the pearl red balloons. I believe as I am speaking, I am being a voice of all foreigners in love with Korea- and I am absolutely dumbfounded at this situation in Korean entertainment. 한국에 사는 한국사람들은 모르지만 해외에 사는 한국사람들은 반드시 압니다. 한국이 아닌 다른 나라들도 한국의 연예가를 향해 큰 관심을 쏟고 있습니다. 난, 한국 드라마만 많이 봐서 한국말을 유창하게 할 수 있도록 되고, 연예인들의 이름을 받아쓰기로 적을수도 있고, 매년 한국으로 가서 공연과 방송국에 가고, 스피드레이서 (솔직히 완전 후졌던 영화) 를 비를 응원하기 위해 몇번이고 시청했던 사람들을 봤습니다. 그사람들은 한국사람도 아닌데 그렇게도 한국을 후원합니다. 나 또한 펄레드 풍선을 흔들던 때를 기억합니다. 난 나의 목소리가 나뿐이 아닌 한국을 사랑하는 모든 외국인들의 목소리라고 믿습니다- 그리고 난 이 한국 연예가에 대한 사태에 대해 할말을 잃었습니다.
I go through my fob Korean friends mocking United States every single day. I go through my German friends talking disrespectfully about United States all the time. I even hear Americans talking shit about their own motherland. But we all abide in each other, understand one another, and grow together. 난 매일매일 내 한국친구들이 미국에 대해 욕을 하는걸 봅니다. 내 독일 친구들도 마찬가지입니다. 어쩔때는 미국사람들도 미국에대해 나쁘게 말을 하곤 합니다. 하지만 우리는 이러면서 살고, 서로를 이해하고, 그러면서 자랍니다.
That’s how United States of America came to be a successfully multicultural, and internationally renowned (with the reputation of bad-ass youthfulness and yet the leading country of the world.) And as I see it, Koreans cannot tolerate a little bit of offense to see their nation fight it off and grow stronger altogether. A little bit of cuts and scars here and there is what you need to stand back up on your feet and get tough and mature. How come Korea lacks understanding, sympathy, and tolerance so much? 그렇게 해서 미국은 오늘날처럼 이렇게 성공적으로 다문화적이고, 전세계가 알아보는 (‘젊음의 반항’ 같은 나라이면서도 세계를 이끌어가는 그런) 나라가 되었습니다. 하지만 내가 보기엔, 한국인들은 조금의 모욕도 관대히 취급하지 못함으로서 나라 전체가 힘을 합쳐 어려움을 해치고 함께 성장함을 거부하는 사람들 같습니다. 조금의 아픔과 상처는 성숙해짐을 위한 희생입니다. 한국은 어째서 그걸 위한 이해심과, 동정과, 인내력이 부족한걸까요?
Of course, my disappointment in Korea didn’t start from Jay Park (because that would make me a shallow airhead). It’s not a very sweet reputation to have, when Korean citizens practically type up inappropriate stuff online and have their celebrities go commit suicide every now and then. As a country you have killed several people now. As a country you have kicked out yet another singer in Korea. Are you proud? Because you kicked out a non-Korea-lover? Is it normal to you, that this has happened? To a foreigner like me, this message reminds me of communism- “praise the land, or get out”. And Koreans, who are responsible for this, are nothing but violent and cruel people. 물론 나의 실망은 박재범의로서부터 일어난 것은 아닙니다 (만약 그랬다면 난 생각없는 사람이 되겠지요). 인터넷에다 곱지않은 글들을 써 올려 연예인들이 종종 자살을 하곤 하는 그런 나라란, 그다지 좋은 이미지는 아니라고 봅니다. 한 나라가 힘을 합쳐 여러 사람을 죽였지요. 한 나라가 힘을 합쳐 또 한명의 가수를 내쫒았구요. 자랑스럽습니까? 한국을 사랑하지 않는 사람을 내쫒아서? 이런 일이 생기는게 당연한 것이었을까요? 나같은 해외사람에겐 이건“이 땅을 찬양하지 않겠다면 꺼져라” 라고 외치는 공산주의와도 같습니다. 이런 사건에 대해 책임이 있는 한인들은 잔인하고 잔혹한 사람들로밖에 보이지 않습니다.

After all, in America, people caught in *** tapes and drug/physical/***ual abuse and have come out are still making money in entertainment after being bashed by the society. 처음엔 나도 어느정도 한국사람들을 이해했고, 너무도 쉽게 인생을 놔버린 연예인들이 잘못되었다고 생각을 했습니다. 왜냐하면, 미국에서는 ***테이프에 걸린 사람들도, 마약/신체적/육적 학대를 했던 사람들도, 게이라고 밝힌 사람들도 한땐 사람들에게 욕을 먹었을지 몰라도 연예가에서 잘 버텨살고 있으니까요.
Do you realize that Michael Jackson the king of pop was a child molester, Paris Hilton the millionaire celebrity made numerous *** tapes, Britney Spears the top female singer suffers from mental illness, Snoop Dog the hip hop legend spits out swear words in too many of their songs to count, Miss J of America’s Next top model is GAY? I swear, if these people were Koreans, they would’ve never reached out onto the world and their talents would’ve gone unnoticed, because these characteristics are ‘way too inappropriate’ as a public face. Do you realize that the problem lies in you people? 알고계셨나요- 팝의 전설 마이클 잭슨은 아동 성희롱자였고, 백만장자 패리스 힐든은 수많은 ***테입을 만들었고, 톱 가수브리트니 스피어스는 실제로 정신병자이고, 힙합의 전설 스눕독 은 욕설이 안들어간 노래가 없을정도로 많고, 탑모델의 미스 제이는 게이라는걸? 맹세하는데, 이 사람들이 만약에 한국에서 태어났다면 절대로 세계가 알아주는 연예인이 되지 못했겠고 그들의 재능은 물거품이 되었겠지요. 이런점들은 공인으로서 너무나도 부적당하다는 그 이유만으로. 문제는 당신들에게 있다는거, 알고 계신가요?
Jay Park incident, I must say, if you people could put yourselves in his shoes and tried your best to confide in him and understand him for just a quick second to understand what drove him to write that kind of an immature message, I assure you that Jay would’ve been lovingly forgiven, he would’ve learned his lesson and repented, and 2PM would’ve continuously worked as 7 members. 박재범씨의 일로 돌아가보자면- 당신들이 잠시나마 왜 그가 그런 어리석은 글을 썼을지, 그의 입장에서 생각해보고, 이해하려 하고 믿으려 했다면, 그는 분명히사랑 안에서 용서가 되었을거고, 박재범 또한 깊게 회개할것이며, 2PM은 계속해서 7명이 함께 활동할 수 있었을것입니다.
For a foreigner who so dearly loved Korea, the nation and its people have devastatingly disappointed me.
