Peter, Paul & Mary는 모두 멤버들의 실제 이름으로,

그리고.. 누구나 살면서 각종 영상 매체를 통해 한번쯤은 들어봤음직한 곡,
Puff, The Magic Dragon은 미국의 시인, Leonard Lipton의 시를 가사로 인용한 곡으로서,
용 Puff와 꼬마 Jackie Paper의 이야기로, 마치 한 편의 동화 같은
예쁘고 아기자기함이.. 느껴지기도 한다. 일단은...
일단은.. 이라고 단서를 단 까닭은,
이 곡이 단순히 동화적 아름다움만을 추구한 곡만은 아니기 때문이다.
꿈 많던 소년 Jackie가, Puff와 함께 했었던 순수했던 어린 시절과 꿈과 모험 등을 뒤로 한 채
점차 어른이 되어 현실 속으로 사라지게 되고
Puff는 친구를 잃은 슬픔에 잠겨 역시 어디론가 떠난다는..
다소 씁쓸한 결말의 가사.

2009년 9월 16일, 백혈병의 악화로 인해 72세를 일기로 타계..
글쎄, 지금쯤 그녀는 하늘 나라에서
그녀의 어린 시절을 함께 했었던 Puff와 함께
즐거운 시간을 보내고 있지 않을까요..
...싶은 생각도 들고.
그리고, 글을 쓰다 보니 아낌 없이 주는 나무 이야기가 나와서..
언젠가 네이버 웹툰에서 본, '실질 객관 동화'의 한 장면이 떠올랐다.
그는, 그녀는, 나무는, 과연 행복했을까?
