Deprived of meaningful work,

men and women lose their reason for existence ; they go stark, raving mad.

Pride goes before downfall,

but humility comes before honor.

Do not boast about tomorrow,

for you do not know

what tomorrow may bring forth.

A man's pride brings him low,

humility gains honor.

Even a fool is thought wise

if he keeps silent, and

discerning if he holds his tongue.

Whoever trusts in his riches will fall.

In his heart a man plans his course,

but the LORD determines his steps.

When times are good, be happy;

but when times are bad, consider:

God has made the one as well as the other.

Therefore, a man cannot discover

anything about his future.

Before I was afflicted I went astray,

but I obey your word.

It was good for me to be afflicted

so that I might learn your decrees.
