FIRST SIGHT " Who are they? " I peeked at him from the corner of my eye, and he was still staring at me. "That's Edward Cullen. He's gorgeous, of course, but don't waste your time. He doesn't date. Apparently none of the girls here are good-looking enough for him" I glanced sideways at the beautiful boy, who was looking at his tray now, picking a bagel to pieces with long, pale fingers. I bit my lip to hide my smile. Then I glanced at him again. His face was turned away, but I thought his cheek appeared lifted, as if he were smiling, too. PHENOMENON I was standing by the back corner of the truck. Edward Cullen was standing four cars down from me, staring at me in horror. His face stood out from a sea of faces, all frozen in the same mask of shock. But of more immediate importance was the dark blue van that was skidding, tires locked and squealing against the brakes, spinning wildly across the ice of the parking lot . It was going to hit the back corner of my truck, and I was standing between them. A low oath made me aware that someone was with me, and the voice was impossible not to recognize. Tow long, white hands shot out protectively in front of me, and the van shuddered to a stop a foot from my face . “ Can I talk to you for a minute? “ “ How in the…How did you get over so fast?” “ I was standing right next to u, Bella” “ You were by your car” “No, I wasn’t” “ I saw you” “ Bella, I was standing with you, and I pulled you out of the way . I think you hit your head pretty hard” “ There’s nothing wrong with my head” “ What do you want from me, Bella?” “I want to know the truth “ “ What do you think happened?” “ All I know is that you weren’t anywhere near me, so don’t tell me I hit my head too hard. That van was going to crush us both- and it didn’t, and your hands left dents in the side of it – “ “ You think I Lifted a van off you? Nobody will believe that, you know “ I’m not going to tell anybody“ “ Then why does it matter? Can’t you just thank me and get over it?” “ Thank you “ “ You are not going to let it go, are you?” “No” “In that case..I hope you enjoy disappointment“ INVITATIONS “Bella? “ his voice shouldn’t have been so familiar to me, as if I’d known the sound of it all my life rather than for just a few short weeks. “ What? Are you speaking to me again?” “ No, not really” “ Then what do you want, Edward?” “I’m sorry. I’m being very rude, I know. But it’s better way, really” “ I don’t know what you mean “ “ It’s better if we’re not friends. It would be more…prudent for you not to be my friend” “ It’s too bad you didn’t figure that out earlier. You could have saved yourself all this regret” “ Regret? For what?” “For not just letting that stupid van squish me” “ You think I regret saving your life?” “ I know you do” “ You don’t know anything” Edward was walking past the front of my truck, looking straight forward, his lips pressed together. SCARY STORIES “ Do you know any of our old stories, about where we came from- the Quileutes, I mean” “ Not really” “ Well, there are lots of legends, some of them claiming to date back to the Flood – supposedly, the ancient Quileutes tied their canoes to the tops of the tallest trees on the mountain to survive like Noah and the ark” He smiled, “ Another legend claims that we descended from wolves-and that the wolves are our brothers still. It’s against tribal law to kill them. Then there are the stories about the cold ones” His voice dropped a little lower “ The cold ones?” “Yes. There are stories of the cold ones as old as the wolf legends , and some much more recent. According to legend, my own great- grandfather knew some of them. He was the one who made the treaty that kept them off our land” He rolled his eyes “ He was a tribal elder, like my father. You see, the cold ones are the natural enemies of the wolf – well, not the wolf, really, but the wolves that turn into men, like our ancestors. You would call them werewolves” “Werewolves have enemies? “Only one” PORT ANGELES “ I followed you to Port Angels, I went looking for you at the bookstore. And I heard what they were thinking. I saw your face in his mind ” “ Let’s say, ,,you could know what people are thinking , red minds, …” “It’s harder that it should be-keeping track of you. Usually I can find someone very easily, ones I’ve heard their mind before …Just one exception” “……” “You. You are nothing . So, I’d rather know what you’re thinking-even if what you’re thinking is insane“ “ but how do u know I had ….? “ “ I followed your scent” “ How does it work-the mind-reading thing? Can you read anybody’s mind, anywhere? How do you do it? Why do you think you can’t hear me? “ “ I don’t know . The only guess I have is that maybe your mind doesn’t work the same way the rest of theirs do” “ I’m a freak?” “ I hear voices is my mind and you’re worried that you’re the freak, “ he laughed “ Don’t worry, it’s just a theory…” “ I’m tired of trying to stay away from you Bella. So I’m giving up. I’m just going to do what I want now, and let the chips fall where they may” "....................." “ I do want to know what you’re thinking –everything. I just wish..that you wouldn’t be thinking some things” “That’s quite a distinction” “ Do you truly believe that you care more for me than I do for you? If leaving is the right things to do, then I’ll hurt myself to keep from hurting you, to keep you safe” THEORY “ you haven’t asked me the most important question yet.. Don’t you want to know if I drink blood?” "..............." ” I’m the world’s best predator, aren’t I? Everything about me invites you in –my voice, my face, even my smell. As if I need any of that! As if you could outrun me! As if you could fight me off” “When you walked past me ,I could have ruined everything Carlisle has built for us, right then and there. If I hadn’t been denying my thirst for the last, well too many years, I wouldn’t have been able to stop myself” “ I couldn’t understand why. How you could hate me so quickly..” “ To me, it was like you were some kind of demon, summoned straight from my own personal hell to ruin me. The fragrance coming off your skin..I thought it would make me deranged that first day. In that one hour, I thought of a hundred different ways to lure you from the room with me, to get you alone. And I fought them each back, thinking of my family, what I could do to them I hadrun out, to get away before I could speak the words that would make you follow..” “ You are exactly my brand of heroin” “ Don’t be afraid. I promise..I swear no to hurt you” “ I was afraid..because, for, well, obvious reason I can’t stay with you. And I’m afraid that I’d like to stay with you, much more than I should” “ Tell me what you’re thinking . It’s still so strange for me, not knowing” “ I was wishing I could know what you were thinking…” “ And?” “ I was wishing that I could believe that you were real. And I was wishing that I wasn’t afraid “ “ I don’t want you to be afraid “ “ you are the most important thing to me now. The most important thing to me ever” “And so the lion fell in love with the lamb..” About there things I was absolutely positive. First, Edward was a vampire. Second, there was part of him-and I didn’t know how potent that part might be – that thirsted for my blood, And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocable in love with him.
