저는 간호사입니다. 임상에서 지금까지 Crutchfield Jacob's Syndrome이라고 불리우는 질병에 대해 말씀드리겠습니다.
저는 지난 10년간 광우병으로 의심되는 (그러나 Crutchfield Jacob's Syndrome이라고 불린) 환자를 4명 돌보았었습니다. (그중 한명은 큰 병원에 가서 해부해서 광우병이란 정확한 진단명을 받았습니다.)
1명은 광우병이 진전해서 거의 움직일 수 없는 상태의 환자였고
3명은 "미쳐 날뛰던" Phase의 환자였습니다.
그중 2명과의 "조우"는 5년이 넘은 지금도 기억이 생생합니다.
두명 다 여자환자였는데 첫번째 여인은 45킬로그램정도의 몸무게로 3명의 스태프 중 한명의 머리채를 잡아채서 침대 레일에 그야말로 Pounding을 해대는 것을 다른 두명의 스태프의 힘으로 모자라서 더 많은 사람을 불러야 했던 게 기억나구요.
두번째 여인은 45킬로보다는 더 나갔으나 그리 뚱뚱한 사람은 아니었는데 그 환자가 직원중 한명의 손가락을 뼈가 나오도록 물어뜯었습니다.
제가 정신병동에서도 근무한 적이 있지만 이런 꼴은 본 적이 없었거든요. 잠복기 10년, 30-60년 지나서 만약 인구의 25%가 이런 병에 걸려 길거리에 활보하고 다닌다면 그들을 다 입원시킬 facility도 충분하지 않을 것은 확실합니다.
( ㅠㅠ 미국도 이런데 우리나라사람은 유전자 구조상 더 걸리기 쉽다죠? )
그럼 정말로 "Shaun of the Dead", "28 days later" 뭐 이런 영화들이 상상이 됩니다.
병원에서 medical staff들끼리 서로 "니가 내가 광우병 걸려서 저러고 다니면 권총으로 쏴달라"고 그럽니다.
무섭습니다. 광우병은 지금 연구가 되고있기는 한건지 모르겠습니다. 그냥 걸려서 곱게 죽는 병 같으면 이렇게 무섭지는 않을 것입니다. 우리는 감염된 쇠고기로 인해서 모두 몇년후에 서로 권총으로 쏴줘야만 할 상황이 올까봐 두려운 것입니다.
What is Crutchfield Jacob's Syndrome?
It is called Creutzfeld-Jacob Syndrome. It is indeed related to the BSE that we have heard so much about in the past few years. It is a rare and fatal human neurodegenerative condition that degenerates the brain, makes it kind of mushy or spongy. Early in the illness, patients usually experience psychiatric symptoms, which most commonly take the form of depression or, less often, a schizophrenia-like psychosis. Unusual sensory symptoms, such as "stickiness" of the skin, have been experienced by half of the cases early in the illness. Neurological signs, including unsteadiness, difficulty walking and involuntary movements, develop as the illness progresses and, by the time of death, patients become completely immobile and mute. The most likely route of exposure was through meat from cows, not fluid transfer. It mainly affects the brain and spinal cord of clinically ill animals over two years of age, it doesn't transfer through the muscle meat. Anything around the organs and the spine (like tenderloin) are more affected because it is a neurological disease.
I HAVE TO ADD THIS: OH YES IT CAN, why do you think they tell you that none of the meat has entered into the food chain. We tank these animals in hydro-chloric acid. We won't even give them back to the farmer to feed to his dogs. Why have they imposed such restrictions on just muscle meat coming into the states? Nothing with bone in goes through the border because of the minute possibility of it being infected.

미국인들이 먹는 소보다 못한 저질 쓰레기 쇠고기를 헐값에 우리나라에 수입해 옵니다.
더군다가 한국인은 유전자 구조상 영국인보다는 3배 미국인 보다는 2배더 광우병에 걸릴 확률이 높다죠?
거기다가 뼈와 가죽 까지........
이젠 곧 현실이 됩니다..
