Rehtaeh Parsons, a teen from Nova Scotia, was a gorgeous, kind, straight-A student with her whole life ahead of her. On Thursday, she hung herself in her bathroom. On Sunday night, her family took her off life-support.
레테 파슨은 스코티아 노바에 사는 착하고 아름답고 성적이 우수했던 청소년이다.
어느 목요일, 그녀는 화장실에서 목을 맨 상태로 발견되어 병원으로 이송되었다.
그리고 연이은 일요일에 그녀의 가족은 생명유지장치를 제거했다.
Rehtaeh could no longer take the anguish and torment.
레테는 더 이상 삶의 고통과 괴롭힘을 감수할 수 없었던 것이다.
Approximately a year and a half earlier, in November 2011, when Rehtaeh was 15 years old, she was reportedly gang-raped by four boys, classmates of hers. The trauma did not end there. One of the boys reportedly took a photo of the act and circulated it among Rehtaeh’s school and community where, as noted, by Rehtaeh’s mother, “it quickly went viral.” Authorities reportedly investigated the s***** assault but claimed there was insufficient evidence to make formal charges.
약 1년 6개월 전쯤인 한 2011년 11월, 레테가 15살이었을 때 그녀는 그녀의 반친구들 네명에게 집단강간당했다.
그 상처는 거기에서 끝나지 않았다. 그녀를 강간한 남자아이들 중 하나가 그녀의 사진을 학교와 동네 전체의 사람들에게 돌렸다.
거기다가 레테의 엄마까지도 그녀가 강간당하는 사진을 보았다. 당시에 강간 사건은 증거가 부족하여 아무도 처벌받지 않았다.
Rehtaeh’s mother recalls the investigation:
They didn’t even interview the boys until much, much later. To me, I’d think you’d get the boys right away, separate them…. Nothing was done about [the photos] because they couldn’t prove who had pressed the photo button on the phone. [She was told that the distribution of the photos is] not really a criminal issue, it’s more of a community issue. Even though she was 15 at the time, which is child pornography…. The whole case was full of things like that. We didn’t have a rape kit done because we didn’t even know (anything had happened) until several days later when she had a breakdown in my kitchen. She was trying to keep it to herself.
레테의 엄마가 그 조사에 대해서 말했다.
-경찰들은 나의 딸을 강간한 소년들에 대한 수사조차도 아주 늦게 시작했어요. 그들은 쉽게 용의선상에서 벗어났죠.
그리고 나의 딸이 강간당한 사진들에 대한 조취도 없었어요. 그리고 사진을 공유하는 건 심지어 범죄행위로 처벌받지도 못해요.
Tormented and bullied, Rehtaeh was forced to leave her school and tried to start fresh in a new community. Despite efforts, she continued to struggle, at one point checking into a hospital to cope with suicidal thoughts, anger, and depression.
레테는 결국 그녀의 학교를 자퇴하고 다른 동네에서 학교를 다니기 시작했다. 하지만 그럼에도 그녀는 계속 자살에 관련된 생각과
분노, 그리고 우울증으로 고통받았다.
그리고 결국은 자살로 삶을 마감했다.
