무엇보다 먼저 제 자신을 소개하겠습니다. 저의 이름은 데이비드 데 디스만이구요 네덜란드의 엔쉬데라는 곳에 사는 20살 남자 학생이죠. 제가 가장 좋아하는 것은 축구입니다. 우리 나라(네덜란드)의 리그팀중 내가 서포트 하는 클럽은 당연히 psv 아인트호벤이죠. 아인트 호벤 홈페이지의 게시판 관리를 맡은 경험도 있답니다. 얼마전 우리팀이 챔피언스리그 8강에서 탈락했습니다. 그래서인지 요즘들어 한국 선수들의 플레이가 더 그리워지네요. 오늘은 저의 영웅 한국선수들에 대한 이야기를 해볼까 합니다.
전 2002년의 여름을 기억합니다. 가장 큰 축구 행사인 월드컵이 시작하려고 하였지만, 우리 조국이 출전을 하지 못하였죠. 우리 조국이 대회에 출전하지 못했다는 것은 나에게는 굉장히 생소한 일이었고, 나는 어느 나라를 응원해야할지 혼란스러웠어요. 하지만 거스 히딩크 라는 네덜란드의 감독이 한국의 감독으로 있는 것을 알게되었죠. 많은 네덜란드 사람들은 한국 축구에 대해서 잘 몰랐던게 사실입니다. 우리들에게 한국은 아시아의 어떤 나라였고, 선수를 한명조차도 몰랐죠. 하지만 나는 축구를 사랑했고 나는 “까짓 것 그냥 한번 보지뭐” 하는 심정으로 그들의 경기를 보기 시작했습니다. 그리고 그들의 경기에서 내가 느낀 것은 그들의 승리를 하기 위한 의욕과 투쟁심이었지요.
한국이 그렇게 좋은 성적을 낼거라고 기대한 사람은 없었습니다. 그들은 유럽의 강호들을 상대로 경기를 펼쳤고, 그들을 이겼지요. 그러자 우리 나라 사람들은 한국에 대해서 흥미를 가지기 시작했어요. 점점 더 많은 사람들이 그들의 경기를 보기 시작했고, 한국의 이름을 외워가기 했지요. 여자들은 한국팀의 스타 선수들 중 안정환 선수를 좋아했습니다. 한국은 월드컵에서 굉장히 잘했지만, 그들의 행진도 결국 독일 앞에서 멈추고 말았죠. 하지만 그들은 굉장히 인상적이었습니다. 거스 히딩크는 그후 한국에서 신처럼 대접을 받았고, 나는 여전히 한국 선수들의 매력에 푹 빠져 있었죠. 월드컵이 끝난후 모든 것은 바뀌었어요. 세계의 유수 클럽들은, 한국의 선수들을 주목하기 시작했던 것이죠.

first of all, let me introduce myself. i am a 20 year old guy who lives in enschede, the netherlands. one of my biggest interests in life is football. in my country i support psv eindhoven. i remember the summer of 2002. the world cup was about to start, the biggest football event. a big problem was that my country was not participating in world cup 2002. it was a strange year, because i had no idea who to support. however, a dutch coach named guus hiddink became the head coach of south-korea. but most dutch people did not know anything about south-korea, it was a country somewhere in asia and no one knew any player of their team. but i love football, so i was like: “maybe i should give it a try and watch a match of south-korea”. and one of the things i noticed when they played was their will to fight, to succeed.
nobody knew south-korea would be so successful. they played against big european countries and they won their matches. and then people in my country became interested in south-korea. more and more people started to watch their matches, and slowly dutch people started to know some players by name. dutch girls liked ahn, one of the big stars in the south-korean team. the success of south-korea was unbelievable, but all dreams come to an end. south-korean did great in the world cup, but eventually they failed against germany. but still, it was extremely impressive. guus hiddink achieved a god status in south-korea, and i was still impressed with the talent of the korean players. since the world cup in 2002 many things changed. the good results of south-korea were acknowledged by clubs all over the world.
when ji-sung park and young-pyo lee came to eindhoven, dutch media were sarcastic about it. no one could understand why guus hiddink brought them to eindhoven. people didn’t believe in korean players. park and lee had a tough time in eindhoven in the beginning. they were not so popular and to be honest: they failed to impress for a long time. park even had a moment where hiddink told him: or you show everyone what you can do, or maybe you should leave. but all dutch journalists and media had the surprise of their life. park and lee started too adept to european football and their play became better and better each day. they became popular and they were players we couldn’t miss in eindhoven. as a psv eindhoven supporter i was happy with them, they did so much good things for the team.
their ultimate moment of fame was against ac milan in the champions league. psv played so extremely good, and park and lee were part of an amazing team who showed ac milan each corner of the field. and last season lee was my favourite player in the team. i became a big fan of young-pyo lee. i learned much about korean football. i know about many korean players, and even the k-league was not a secret to me anymore. i met korean people by internet, we talked about football. they gave me access to websites that contained k-league matches, i watched many. korean football changed. it became more popular and more korean players have a chance of succeeding in europe. i actually hoped for a 3rd korean player to come to eindhoven. a young talented player named chu-young park was linked with psv in the dutch media.
but then it happened; my nightmare became reality. psv had an amazing season in the champions league. and more clubs also saw the talent of lee and park. and then many clubs were linked to lee and park. i didn’t take much time and then manchester united bought park. we (psv supporters) were all very sad he left. he was sold for a very low prize and we started to realise that we really missed him in our team. but i was glad lee stayed, because he was (and is) my favourite player. the transfer market was almost closed, so my worries were gone. and then suddenly tottenham hotspur fc bought lee and he left eindhoven. it was pretty strange, when i look back. “our” korean heroes left eindhoven. we got decent replacement, but it was like a big adventure that started in 2002 ended. these days there are no korean players in eindhoven anymore.
for korea, it was wonderful that lee and park headed to the premier league. for me it was a sad moment, but i am glad for all the korean fans. because not only park and lee moved; but the level of korean football also moved to another stage. these days there are many young korean players who are doing well in the k-league. these days it is just a matter of time before they move to europe. and i am sure they will succeed. in the past some players failed in europe, chun-soo lee was one of them. but still, chun-soo lee is very talented. i am sure he will succeed in europe some day. i am glad korean football developed; it improved with the speed of light. i still hope chu-young park will play in eindhoven some day. korean people should be happy. korean players are not different then european players anymore when it comes to skill and understanding of the game. they can succeed in europe.
i am satisfied and delighted with the improvement of korean football. when i think about what changed since 2002, i can smile. young-pyo lee is playing in england now, but he is still my korean hero. and when i walk into my room, i see a paper on my wall with his autograph on it. it even says “to david dé” above his autograph. i got min-ji seo to thank, she sent me the autograph. for me the korean adventure started in 2002, but in fact it still goes on. i met many korean friends by internet, and my favourite player (young-pyo lee) got his dream to come true: to play in the premier league…
