모르는 사람이 무심코 박스를 열었을 때, 광대가 스프링 장치 같은 것에 의해 갑자기 불쑥 튀어나와서 사람을 깜짝 놀라게 만는 거.. 아시죠?
음.. 근데 요즘 이 용어는 cyberpunk SF에 자주 쓰이는데요.
가상현실에 들어가기 위해 머신이나 네트워크 또는 BBS에 로그온 하는 걸 의미합니다.
반대로 빠져나오는 걸 "jacking out"이라고 하죠.
SF영화에선 뇌가 가상현실과 직접 컨택하는 걸 간섭하기위해 전극을 신경소켓에다 꽂는 걸 나타냅니다.

Will Smith가 주연을 맡은 작품중 흥행에 성공했던 많은 수의 영화들 (Men in Black 이나 Independence Day 같은)이 미국 독립기념일 (4th of July)에 극장개봉을 했던 공통점이 있습니다.
Fox측에서 올해 5일 (대부분 7월1일~5일까지 휴무에 들어갑니다.) 황금연휴에 맞춰 개봉일자를 조정해왔던 점이 이상할 게 전혀없죠. 현재로선 어렵게 되었지만.. 하지만 올해만큼은 Will Smith도 그 자리를 Spider-Man 2 (Sony, 6월 30일 개봉) 에게 양보하게 되었습니다. 정면대결은 아마 피하고 싶었을 겁니다. 그 결과 어떤 필름도 개봉예정이 없던 7월 16일로 결정되었다는군요.
원래의 스크립트 타이틀은 "Hardwired" 였답니다.. Jeff Vintar라는 사람이 직접 쓴 스크립트죠. 하지만 스크립트 자체가 Isaac Asimov (1920-1992)의 원작소설 "I, Robot"의 9개의 스토리로부터 영감을 얻었다는군요. Asimov의 스토리에 맞춰 변형되었고..
(하지만 소설의 어느 특정 부분을 따오진 않았다고 합니다. 그 점만을 고려하면 순수 창작인 셈이죠.)
그 결과 영화 제목도 "I, Robot" 이 영화가 흥행에 성공한다면 앞으로 Asimov의 다른 스토리, "Robot" 시리즈가 계속 제작될 예정이라고 합니다.
그런데.. 한가지 재밌는 사실은 이 영화의 프로젝트 자체는 Walt Disney Pictures에서 개발했었다고 하네요. 어찌하다보니 Fox에게 넘어가게 되었고 Walt Disney Pictures에선 Asimov의 또다른 robot 얘기인, Bicentennial Man 제작에 전념하게 되었답니다. 하지만 Bicentennial Man은 제작비용을 고려했을 때 처참한 흥행기록만을 남기며 그 결과 디즈니에게 막대한 피해를 입혔죠.
특수효과의 면면을 살펴보자면, live-action 배우들과 CGI robot 캐릭터의 조합으로 이루어질건 당연한데.. FX 제작회사들이 지금까지 만들어온 영화와는 좀더 다른 방식으로 제작되었다고 합니다. 주요 robot 캐릭터인 경우 배우가 직접 연기하고 이를 바탕으로 해서 CGI를 덧씌워서 마감하는 방식이죠. The Lord of the Rings에서 "Gollum" 처럼 말이죠.

Premise: Set in a future Earth (2035 A.D.) where robots are common assistants and workers for their human owners, this is the story of "robotophobic" Chicago Police Detective Del Spooner"s (Smith) investigation into the murder of Dr. Miles Hogenmiller, who works at U.S. Robotics (run by Greenwood), in which a robot, Sonny (Tudyk), appears to be implicated, even though that would mean the robot had violated the Laws of Robotics, which is apparently impossible. It seems impossible because... if robots can break those laws, there"s nothing to stop them from taking over the world, as humans have grown to become completely dependent upon their robots. Or maybe... they already have? Aiding Spooner in his investigation is a psychologist, Dr. Susan Calvin (Moynahan), who specializes in the psyches of robots. (McBride plays Smith"s boss, who encourages him to close the case quickly to avoid political fallout; Cromwell plays the creator of the world"s most advanced robots.)
