It was a cold, dark night in the England of long ago. 춥고 어두운밤 영국에서 내려오는 오랜 이야기다. An old man hurried thuough the deep woods. 한 노인이 깊은 숲을 급히 지나갔다. The man was Merlin, a wise man and a magician, 그남자는 멀린이라는 슬기로운 마법사였다, As he walked, Merlin asked himself " why is it that the king has order me to come to his castle such a late hour? 그는 걸으면서 계속 자문했다. "대체 왜 늦은 시간에 오아이 나를 성으로 오라고 부른거지?" Merlin made his way to a small door in the castle wall. 멀린은 성벽에 작은문을 만들었습니다. He knocked on the door softly 멀린은 가볍게 문을 두드렸습니다. A soldire opende the door and told the magician to come in . 병사 하나가 문을열었고 마법사를 들어오라고 말했습니다. The soldier led Merlin to a small room where they found the king. 군인은 멀린을 작은방 어디에선가 그들을 찾는 왕에게 데려다 주었습니다. "I thank you for coming so quickly, my friend" the king said "이렇게 빨리 와줘서 고맙네 나의 친구여" 왕이 말했습니다 "Now listen carefully to my words. A son was born tonight to my wife, the qeen, He is our ferst and only child." 오늘밤 내아내,왕비가 아이를 낳았다네. 그에겐 첫째이자 오직 하나뿐인 아이. Merlin started to tell the king how pleased he was to hear the good news. 멀린은 그 소식을 듣고 얼마나 기뻣는지 왕에게 말을 시작하려고 했다. But the king signaled hem to be quiet and went on speaking. 허나 왕은 조용히 말하라고 신호를 보냈다. "I have given my son the name of Arthur" said the king. "난 나의 아들에게 아더라는 이름을 지었네" 왕이 말했다. "And i have called you here so theat he wall have a better chance king when I am gone" "그리고 내가 자네를 이곳으로 부른건 내가 죽고나면 아더에게 왕이 될 더좋은 기회를 주기 위해서네" "what do you mean?" asked Merlin. "무슨 뜻이에요?" 멀린이 물었다. "I am an old man" said the king. "난 늙었다네" 왕이 말했다. "I prolably will not live long enough to see Arthur grow to be a man" "난 아마도 아더가 어른이 될때까지 오래 살지 못할걸세" "one of the dukes or princes in my kingdom may try to kill little Arthur and steal the crown for himself" said the king. "내 왕국의 공작이나 제후 누군가가 어린아더를 죽이고 왕권을 빼앗아 자신이 왕이 되려 하겠지" 왕이 말했다. "This very night I will give the child to you. Take him and find a good home for him" 이 깊은밤 난 자네에게 아이를 주겠네. 데리고 가서 좋은집에 맡기게" "Tell no one that he is my son Then, when Arthur is old enough, see that he is crowned king of England" "누구에게도 나의 아들이라고 말해선 안되네. 아더가 충분히 크면 끄대 아더를 영국의 왕으로 만들어주게나"
