Elizabethans라는 그룹에서 함께 연주하던 크리스 노만(Chris Norman, 보컬),
테리 어틀리(Terry Utley, 기타), 앨런 실슨(Alan Silson, 베이스)은
드러머 피트 스펜서(Pete Spencer)와 함께 1968년 밴드
카인드니스(Kindness)를 결성하였다.
이 4인조 밴드는 1960년대 후반에서 1970년대 초반까지 상당한 양의
싱글을 발표하였으나 차트에 오르지는 못했다. 1975년 이들은
스모키(Smokey)라는 이름으로 새로운 레코드사와 계약을 맺은 후
'If You Think You Know How to Love Me' 라는 곡을 차트 3위에 올려놓는 성공을 거둔다
