The song contained explicitly racist and violent lyrics, mocking the victims of the tsunami disaster. Although the song’s lyrics are not officially credited, it was introduced during the broadcast as “Starring the Miss Jones in the Morning show players” and it is implied that associates of the show provided the vocals.
Miss Jones, along with Miss Info, DJ Envy and Todd Lynn, are the hosts of the well-known show ‘Miss Jones in the Morning,’ airing weekdays from 6 AM to 10 AM. The hosts were not unanimous in the decision to air the parody song, leading to an argument prior to its airing. Miss Info wished to exclude herself saying, ‘That song is really offensive to me and I need to opt out of it.’ She added that ‘[the song] is disrespecting Asians and I am Asian. I just wanted to put myself out of it.’
Miss Jones later replied, ‘I know you feel superior probably because you’re Asian, but you’re not.’
In the middle of the argument, fellow host Todd Lynn says, ‘I’m gonna start shooting Asians.’
Some listeners found the exchange disturbing, especially considering the anti-Asian and violent content of the song.
The song’s chorus, which is set to the tune of ‘We Are the World’, says ‘So now you're screwed. It's the tsunami. You better run and kiss your --- awake. Go find your mommy. I just saw her float by, a tree went through her head. And now your children will be sold in child slavery.’
Outraged New Yorkers who heard the song, complained to news organizations as well as local politicians. Many others learned about the broadcast through Internet recordings, which are widely available on several websites. Numerous message boards urge listeners to protest the station, sign petitions and to voice their complaints to Emmis Communications. People have also complained to Sprint PCS, since the company was identified as the sponsor of the segment.
One listener commented, ‘The song is cruel and inhumane,’ going on to call the morning show hosts ‘uncultured and ignorant.’ Similar reactions have led Hot 97 to remove links to the song and to issue a public apology on their website and on the air. However, it may not be enough, and at least one petition calls for Miss Jones to be taken off the air.
