깊은 밤 마치 내 곁에 누워있는 듯이 곤히 잠든 내사랑의 부드러운 숨소리를 들을 수 있었지 내 베개위에 떠도는 작은 먼지 속에서 겨울달빛이 잔잔히 그녀의 머리카락에 반짝이고 있었지.
그녀는 온화하고 따스했지만 내 마음은 무겁게 남아 있었지...
여명이 밝아오면 내가 떠나는 것을 알기에 그녀의 편안히 잠든 모습을 보았지.
오늘밤은 내가 회상하려 남긴 모든 것이 되겠지... 도대체, 내가 무슨 일을 했을까 ? 왜 그런 일을 저질렀을까 ?
어느 주점에서 단돈 25불과 폐물 몇 점을 털었기때문에 난 죄를 지었고 법을 어겼지... 나의 생은 진정하지 않은 것처럼 보였어,
내가 지은 죄는 내가 연기해야할 연극의 한 장면이었으면 하는 환상을 느꼈지. 난 아직 내 곁에 누워있는 어린 내사랑을

곧이어 아침이 밝아오겠지...
초등학교 동창이었던 사이먼(Paul Simon)과
가펑클(Art Garfunkel)은 1957년부터 듀엣 Tom & Jerry 를 결성
음악활동을 하기 시작해서 1964년 일시적으로 해체한 뒤
1965년에 뉴욕에서 첫 앨범을 발표하면서 1960년대 미국
포크락을 대표하는 밴드 Simon & Garfunkel을 결성하게 되었다.
첫 앨범 Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.은 그다지 성공하지
못했지만 밥 딜런의 초기앨범을 제작한 프로듀서 탐 윌슨
(Tom Wilson)을 만나면서 자칫하면 첫 앨범이 마지막 앨범이
될 뻔한 운명의 시계을 돌려놓을 수 있었다.
이곡은 잘 알려져 있지는 않지만 첫번째 앨범
Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.에 타이틀로 수록된 곡으로 이들의
정겨운 보컬과 시적인가사가 무척 인상적인곡이다.
