WHY "PIGGY" BANK?

For almost three hundred years kids have had

piggu banks. 

But this tradition actually from a misunderstanding. 

In the medieval ages, metal was too precious to be used for household supplies. 

So in Western Europe, they used an orange-colored clay called 'pygg' to make dishes, pans, and bowls. 

Of course even back then, women hid money in secret hiding places. 

And the safest hiding place was inside a bowl   made out of pygg. 

That's how the 'pygg bank' was born. 

Then in  the 18th century, 'piggy banks' began to appear  in England. 

A ceramist had heard the word 'pygg' and just  made  a savings box in the shape of a 'pig'. 

Piggy banks were borm out of this misunderstanding, and have been loved by people ever since.  Why don't you raise one today?

왜 "돼지" 저금통일까?

거의 3백 년 동안 어린이들은 돼지 저금통을 지녀왔다. 그러나 이 전통은 실제로는 오해에서부터 시작되었다. 중세 때는 금속이 가정용품으로 쓰이기에는 너무 귀했다. 그래서 서유럽에서는 접시, 팬, 그리고 그릇을 만드는데 'pygg'라고 불리는 주황색 점토를 사용했다. 물론 그 시절에도 여자들은 은밀한 곳에 돈을 감추어 두었는데, 가장 안전한 곳이 'pygg'로 만든 그릇 속이었다. 그것이 'pygg bank'가 탄생하게 된 배경이다. 그후 18세기 영국에서 돼지저금통이 나타나기 시작했다. 어느 도예가가 'pygg' 라는 단어를 듣고 저금통을 '돼지' 모양으로 만들었던 것이다. 돼지 저금통은 이러한 오해에서 탄생하였고 그 이후로 사람들에게 사랑을 받아 왔다. 오늘 돼지 한 마리 키워 보는 건 어떨까?
