Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth

on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and

dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that

nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long e

ndure.

We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to

dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those

who here gave their lives that that nation might live. 

It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a

larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we

cannot hallow this ground.

The brave men, living and dead who struggled here have

consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.

The wo rld will little note nor long remember what we say here,

but it can never forget what they did here.

It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the

unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so

nobly advanced.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task

remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take

increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last

full measure of devotion--that we here highly that these dead s

hall not have died in vain, that this nation under God shall have

a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people,

by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.

87년전에 우리 선조들은 이 대륙에 자유를 가슴에 품고, 모든 사람

은 평등하게 창조 되었다는 명제를 봉헌한 새 나라를

탄생시켰습니다.

우리는 그 나라가 그러하게 품었던 나라이건 그러하게 봉헌된 나라

이건 간에 그 나라가 오랫동안 지탱될 수 있을 것인지를 시험하는

거대한 시민전쟁을 치르고 있습니다.

우리는 그 전쟁의 거대한 전쟁터에서 만났습니다. 우리는 나라를 살

리기 위해 그들의 삶을 여기서 바친 그들을 위한 마지막 휴식 장소

로써 그 전쟁터의 일부를 바치기 위해 왔습니다. 우리가 이 일을 하

는 것은 아주 합당하고 적절합니다.

그러나 보다 더 큰 의미에서느 우리는 이 땅을 봉헌할 수도 없고 헌

당할 수도 없으며 신성하게 할 수도 없습니다. 여기에서 싸웠더 용

감한 전사자들과 생존자들이 이미 이 땅을 신성하게 해버렸기 때문

입니다. 우리의 미약한 힘으로 이것을 더하거나 뺄 수 없는 엄연한

사실입니다.

세상은 우리가 여기서 했던 말을 거의 주목하지도 않을 것이며, 길

게 기억해 주지도 않을 것입니다. 하지만 그들이 여기서 했었던

결코 잊혀져서는 안 될 것입니다.

오히려 살아 있는 우리가 여기서 싸웠던 그들이 그렇게 더 고결하게

진보시켰던 끝나지 않은 과업을 여기에 봉헌해야 할 것입니다. 또한

우리가 우리 앞에 남겨진 거대한 과업을 여기에 봉헌해야 할 것입니

다.

이 명예로운 자들의 죽음을 통해서 그들이 마지막으로 깊이 재어 보

인 헌신의 이유에 우리는 우리의 헌신을 더욱 키워 나가야 할 것입

니다. 그리고 이 전사자들이 헛되이 죽지 않았다고 여기서 엄숙히

결의해야 합니다.

하나님의 가호 아래 이 나라가 자유의 새로운 탄생을 맞이하고 ,

국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정부는 이 지구에서 결코 무너지지 않게 해야합니다.
