사랑의 기원

지구가 평평하던 때
불구름이 떠다니고
  하늘까지 솟은 산과
  더 높은 산이 있고
  사람들은 나무통처럼
  지구를 굴러다니며
  두 쌍의 팔
  두 쌍의 다리와
  큰 머리 양쪽에
  두개의 얼굴을 가지고 있어
  양 쪽 세상도 다 볼 수 있고
  읽으면서 말할 수 있었고
  그들은 사랑이란 단어조차 몰랐어
  그건 바로 사랑의 시작을 몰랐을 때

  그땐 3개의 성이 있었지
  하나는 두 남자의 등이 붙은
  해의 아이들과
  두 여자아이의 등이 붙어 하나로 된

  신들은 우리의 힘과 반항을
  두려워하기 시작했지
  천둥신은 말했어

  그때 제우스가 말했지
  "내 번개 가위로 혼내주리
  고래의 다리를 자르고
  공룡을 도마뱀으로 만들었듯"
  그리고 번갯불을 꺼내 크게 웃으며
  "가운데를 자르리
  딱 반으로"라고 했지
  곧 먹구름이 모여 거대한 불이 되었고
  천둥번개가 하늘에서 내리쳤지
  번뜩이는 칼날처럼
  육체의 한가운데를 갈라버렸어
  해의 아이들, 달의 아이들, 땅의 아이들
  차례로
  어떤 인도신은
  바늘을 꺼내 배꼽을 만들어
  우리 죄를 상기시켰고
  오시리스와 나일의 신들은
  거대한 폭풍우로 허리케인을 만들어
  우리를 흩어지게 했어
  바람, 비, 홍수
  파도의 조수로 우리를 쓸어버렸고
  또다시 반항하면
  또다시 반을 갈라버린다고 했지
  그럼 한 발로 뛰고
  한 눈으로 볼 거라며..
  -나를 부정하면 파멸하리라-
  전에 당신을 봤을 땐
  갈라지고 난 바로 뒤
  당신은 나를 보고
  나는 당신을 보고 있었어
  너무도 낯익은 얼굴이었지만
  얼굴에 피가 묻어 알아볼 수 없었어

And the storm clouds gathered above
Into great balls of fire
And then fire shot down
From the sky in bolts
Like shining blades Of a knife
And it ripped Right through
the flesh Of the children of the sun
And the moon And the earth
And some Indian god
Sewed the wound up to a hole
Pulled around to our bellies
To remind us of the price we pay
And Osiris and the gods of the Nile
Gathered up a big storm
To blow a hurricane
To scatter us away In a flood of wind and rain
A sea of tidal wavesTo wash us all away
