위 아 더 월드’는 미국의 가수이자 인권운동가인 해리 벨라폰테가 기획했다.
1984년 밥 겔도프 등 영국 아티스트들이 만든 자선앨범 ‘두 데이 노우 이츠 크리스마스’(Do They Know It’s Christmas)에서 영감을 얻었다.
에티오피아 기아 희생자들에 관한 뉴스를 접한 뒤 그는 거물 매니저 켄 크라겐과 함께 완전 무보수 자선 앨범 제작에 함께 할 대형 가수들을 모으기 시작했고, 45명이 동참했다.
7분여의 발라드인 ‘위 아 더 월드’는 라이오넬 리치와 마이클 잭슨이 작곡했다. 녹음은 1985년 1월28일 할리우드의 A&M 스튜디오에서 했다. 한 매니저가 “곡이 로커에게 걸맞지 않다”고 불만을 토로하는 등 녹음 과정이 순탄치 않았지만 12시간 만에 마무리됐다. 3월7일에 발매, 첫주에 80만장이 팔리고 미국 내 각종 음악차트에서 3주 연속 1위에 오르는 등 공전의 히트를 기록했다. 지금까지 전세계에서 7백만장 이상이 팔린 것으로 알려지고 있다.
