영국왕실의 실화로 왕의 아이를 낳은 메리 해밀턴이라는 궁녀가 처형되기 직전의 마음을 노래한 곡이다.

That Mary Hamilton's born a babe to the highest Stuart of all
소문은 메리 해밀턴이 스튜어트 왕가의 아들을 낳은 것이요.

There is a wedding in Glasgow town
글라스고우에서 결혼식이 있다

오늘밤 나와 함께 결혼식을 보러 가자
She put not on her robes of black,
내가 입은 것은 검정 예복도 아니고
Nor her robes of brown,
갈색 예복도 아니었어요
But she put on robes of white, To ride into Glasgow town.
하지만 글라스고우로 가려고 하얀 예복을 입었어요
(죽음을 암시하는)
And as she rode into Glasgow town,
그리고 글라스고우의 길거리에서
The city for to see,
시민들은 불쌍한 날 빤이 보면서
The bailiff's wife and the provost's wife
Cried, "Ah, and alas for thee."
이 식이 네 결혼식(왕실의 신부)이었으면 얼마나 좋을까
라고 슬퍼하며 울었어요
"Ah, you need not weep for me," she cried
날 위해 울지 마라고 난 울면서 말했지요
"You need not weep for me;
당신들이 날 위해 울 필요 없어요
For had I not slain my own wee babe
내가 낳은 갓난아기를 죽이지 않았다면
This death I would not dee."
난 이렇게 죽지 않아도 되었을 테니까요
"Ah, little did my mother think When first she cradled me,
내가 요람의 갓난애였을 땐 서민이었던 어머니는
The lands I was to travel in
And the death I was to dee."
내가 이 나라에서 방랑만 하다가
이렇게 죽게 되리라곤 꿈에도 생각을 못하셨겠죠

머리엔 금관을 씌워드렸지요
And the only reward I find for this,

단두대에서 죽게 되는 것입니다

내 가운을 벗겨버리라고 난 외쳤어요

하지만 속치마는 남겨두세요

그리고 수건으로 내 얼굴을 가려주세요
The gallows I would not see."
단두대를 보고 싶지 않아요
Then by and come the King himself,
그때 왕이 오셔서
Looked up with a pitiful eye,
단두대를 처다보면서 말했어요
"Come down, come down, Mary Hamilton,
내려오너라, 내려오너라 메리 해밀턴아,
Tonight you'll dine with me."
오늘 밤 나와 함께 저녁을 같이하자
"Ah, hold your tongue, my sovereign liege,
그런 말씀하지 마세요 존경하는 전하
And let your folly be;
그러시면 바보가 되실 뿐입니다

나를 이렇게 조롱거리로 만들지 안으셨을 거니까요
