드림 씨어터(Dream Theater)가 밴드 사상 최초의 베스트 컬렉션 앨범으로 돌아온다. 1991년부터 2005년까지 14년에 걸쳐 발표한 곡들 중 희귀 싱글과 B-Side들을 엄선하여 담았고, 여기에 새로 리믹스한 3곡까지 총 22곡을 수록하였다.
앨범의 타이틀인 “GREATEST HIT (…and 21 other pretty cool songs)”에는 드림 씨어터의 유머 감각이 엿보인다. 이번 앨범의 제목이 Greatest Hit‘s’가 아닌 Hit인 것은 드림 씨어터의 곡 중 유일하게 메이저 라디오에서 큰 성공을 거둔 곡인 ‘Pull Me Under’를 의식하여 지은 것이라고 한다. 즉 의역하자면 ‘Pull Me Under와 그 외 멋진 21곡’ 정도가 되겠는데, 라디오나 MTV 같은 미디어의 도움 없이도 전세계에 걸쳐 꾸준히 팬들을 끌어모으고 명곡을 창출해 낸 밴드의 저력을 재치 있게 드러내고 있는 제목이다.
제임스 라브리에(James LaBrie, 보컬), 존 명(John Myung, 베이스), 존 페트루치(John Petrucci, 기타/보컬), 마이크 포트노이(Mike Portnoy, 드럼/보컬), 조던 루디스(Jordan Rudess, 키보드), 이들이 빚어내는 2시간여의 프로그레시브 하드 락이 본 앨범에 고스란히 담겨 있다. 특히 1992년에 발매되어 대히트를 기록한 앨범 “Images And Words”의 수록곡인 ‘Pull Me Under’, ‘Take The Time’, ‘Another Day’는 프로듀서 케빈 셜리(Kevin Shirley)의 손을 거쳐 리믹스된 버전으로 수록되었다. 마이크 포트노이는 이에 대해 새롭게 리뉴얼된 그들의 명곡을 들어볼 수 있는 절호의 기회라고 말했다. “오리지널 곡들은 내게는 언제나 좀 80년대 풍으로 들렸다. 그래서 우리는 좋은 친구이자 오랜 기간 함께 작업해 온 케빈 셜리에게 본 트랙들의 믹스 작업을 맡겼다. 케빈이 훌륭하게 믹스한 덕에 곡들은 기본적으로는 앨범 버전과 같으면서도 우리가 잊고 있던 독창적이면서 미묘한 차이가 느껴진다. 들으면 들을수록 정말 멋지다.”
현재 밴드는 2007년 6월부터 앨범 “Systematic Chaos”의 프로모션 투어에 한창이다. 2008년 5월부터는 오페스(Opeth), 비트윈 더 베리드 앤 미(Between the Buried and Me)와 같은 프로그레시브 메틀 밴드들과 함께 패키지 투어 ‘Progressive Nation Tour 2008’을 시작한다.
20년간 천재적인 음악성과 타의 추종을 불허하는 실력으로 찬사 받아 온 드림씨어터, 그들의 명 넘버들이 집약된 최초의 베스트 앨범 “GREATEST HIT (…and 21 other pretty cool songs)”는 락계에 새로운 역사를 기록할 또 하나의 명반이 될 것임에 틀림없다. 드림 씨어터의 골수 팬들은 물론, 메틀 팬들이라면 놓쳐서는 안 될 앨범이다
