4번의 그래미 어워즈 수상, 지난 앨범 [X&Y]로 현재까지 전세계 1000 만장 이상의 놀라운 판매고를 기록하고 있는 브릿 록의 절대적인 존재, 콜드플레이가 오는 6월 16일 발매되는 네 번째 앨범 [VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS] 발매에 앞서 자신들의 공식 홈페이지(www.coldplay.com)을 통해 첫 싱글 [Violet Hill]을 4월 29일 전격 공개 한다. 그와 동시에 콜드플레이는 자신들을 기다려 준 전세계 팬들을 위해 영국 시간으로4월 29일 12시 15분 (한국시간 4월 29일 저녁 8시 15분)부터1주일 동안 무료 다운로드 서비스를 펼친다고 밝혔다. 무료 다운로드 서비스가 끝난 5월 6일부터 콜드플레이의 첫 싱글 [Violet Hill] 은 국내외에서 디지털 싱글이 본격 서비스 시작된다.
3년만의 새 앨범 발매를 기해, 콜드플레이는 팬들을 위해 런던과 뉴욕에서 무료 공연을 펼칠 예정이다. 앨범이 발매되는 6월 16일에는 런던 브릭스톤 아카데미에서, 1주일 뒤인 6월 23일에는 뉴욕 매디슨 스퀘어 가든에서 각각 열리고, 티켓의 응모 방식에 대한 자세한 정보는 그들의 웹사이트에서 자세히 공지될 예정이다.
콜드플레이의 이번 새 앨범에는 앰비언트 뮤직의 거장 브라이언 이노(Brian Eno)와 비욕(Bjork), 디페시모드(Depeche Mode)등과 함께 작업하였던 마르커스 드라브스(Markus Dravs )가 프로듀서로 참여해 런던, 뉴욕, 바르셀로나 등지에서 녹음한 총 10개의 신곡이 수록되어 있다.
콜드플레이는 2005년 6월에 발매한 앨범 [X&Y]로 현재까지 전세계 천 만장 이상의 판매고를 기록하였고, 지난 2005년 국제음반산업연합 (IFPI: International Federation Of Phonographic Industry)에서 집계한 세계 음반 판매 톱 10 에서 당시 830만장 이상의 판매고를 올리면서 머라이어 캐리(Mariah Carey)를 제치고 1위에 올랐었다. [Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends]앨범은 이 [X&Y]앨범 이후 3년 만에 발매되는 새 앨범이다
