About suffering they were never wrong, 

The Old Masters: how well they understood

Its human position; how it takes place 

While someone else is eating

or opening a window

or just walking dully along;

How, when the aged are reverently,

passionately wating

For the miraculous birth,

there always must be Children

who did not specially want it to happen,

skating On a pond at the edge of the wood:

They never forgot

That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course

Anyhow in a corner,

some untidy spot

Where the dogs go on with their doggy life

and the torture's horse  

Scratches its innocent behind on a tree.

괴로움이 어떻다는 걸 옛 거장들은

익히 파악하고 있었다. 그들은 괴로움이

인간에게 차지하는 위치를 잘알고

있었다. 다른 사람이 식사중이거나,

창을 열거나, 혹은 맥없이 걷고 있을

때 괴로움이 어떻게 생겨나는지를.

노인들이 경건하게, 간절히 기적적인 생명의 탄생을 기다리는 동안에 이를 별로

반기지 않고 숲가 연못에서 스케이트를

타는 아이들이 있다는 걸.

거장들은 잊지 않고 있었다.

끔찍한 순교도 피할길 없이 어떻게든,

일어난다는 걸 - 개들은 개 같이 살아가고

고문자의 말은 애꿎은 제 궁둥이를 나무에

비벼대는 어느 모퉁이, 지저분한 곳에서

In Brueghel's Icarus, for instance:

how everything turns away

Quite leisurely from the disaster;

the plowman may

Have heard the splash,

the forsaken cry,

But for him it was not an important failure;

the sun shone

As it had on the white legs disappearing

into the green Water,

and the expensive delicate ship

that must have seen something amazing,

a boy falling out of the sky, 

Had somewhere to get to

and sailed calmly on.

예를 들어 브뤼겔의 '이카루스'에서

모든 것이 태연자약하게 재앙을 외면하고 있다,

농부는 풍당소리, 고독한 비명을

들었으련만 그에겐 그 소리는

중요한 실패가 아니었다. 푸른 물속으로

사라지는 흰 두다리를 태양은 예사로히

비추었고 한 소년이 공중에서 낙하하는

놀라운 광경을 목격하고도 호화선은

어딘지 행선지를 향해 유유히 항해를

계속해 나갔다.

다들 자신의 일에 급급하여 다른 사람들에게 무슨 큰 일이 일어나든 그저 힐끗 쳐다보고 마는 것을 너무나도 냉혹하게 그린 W. H. Auden의 시. 슬픈 현실이지만 너무나도 현실적이다. 오른쪽을 자세히 보면 물에 빠진 이카루스의 두 다리가 보인다. 그러나 주위는 너무나도 평온하다. 지금도 어딘가에서 다양한 이카루스가 죽어가고 있겠지...
