'아바타' 흥행수익 벌써 1조원 돌파
제임스 캐머런 감독의 신작 '아바타'가 세계 영 화시장에서 거센 돌풍을 일으키고 있다. 영국 BBC뉴스는 3일'아바타'가 전 세계적으로 10억달러(1조1천600억 원)의 흥행수익을 돌파했다고 보도했다. '아바타'는 개봉 17일만에 미국에서만 3억5천만달러(4천60억원), 미국을 제외한 전 세계에서 6억7천만달러(7천770억원)를 벌어들여 모두 10억2천만달러(1조1천830억 원)의 흥행수익을 올렸으며 이 같은 흥행속도는 역대 최단기록에 해당한다고 BBC는 전했다.
또 역대 흥행수익에서도 '타이타닉'(18억달러), '반지의 제왕: 왕의 귀환'(11억 2천만달러), '캐리비언의 해적:망자의 함'(10억7천만달러)에 이어 4위에 올랐다고 보도했다. BBC는 1월 한달간 할리우드 대작들의 개봉이 예정돼 있지 않기 때문에 당분간 '아바타'의 강세가 계속될 것이라고 전망했다.
아바타의 열풍은 한국에서도 이어졌다. 3주째 정상을 지킨 '아바타'는 역대 외화 흥행 기록을 경신하며 관객 수 600만을 훌쩍 넘어섰다. 4일 영화진흥위원회 영화관입장권통합전산망에 따르면 '아바타'는 지난 1-3일 사흘 동안 전국 725개 상영관에서 관객 124만5천757명(42.7%)을 모아 박스오피스 1위를 차지했다. 지난달 17일 개봉 이후 총 누적 관객은 638만6천73명. 개봉 17일 만인 지난 2일 600만을 돌파해 역대 외화 중 최단 기록을 세웠다. 박스오피스 10위권 내의 유일한 한국 영화인 최동훈 감독의 '전우치'는 578개 상영관에서 관객 80만365명(27.4%)을 모아 지난주에 이어 2위를 지켰다.
지난달 23 일 개봉 이후 누적 관객은 325만5천54명이다. 36만3천992명(12.4%)을 더한 '셜록 홈즈'는 지난주에 이어 3위를 지켰고, '앨빈 과 슈퍼밴드2'가 19만397명을 모아 4위에 올라섰다. 화려한 캐스팅을 자랑하는 롭 마셜의 뮤지컬 영화 '나인'은 18만9천566명이 찾 아 5위로 출발했다.

'Avatar' smashes $1bn box office
Avatar has become the fastest movie ever to achieve $1bn in ticket sales around the world, BBC reported.
It said distributors 20th Century Fox say it has earned more than $350m in the United States and more than $670m in the rest of the world in only 17 days. The 3D science fiction blockbuster was directed by James Cameron, who also made Titanic, the best selling movie of all time. The latest figures make Avatar already the fourth-biggest film ever made.
The report said ahead of it are Titanic ($1.8bn), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12bn) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07bn). Avatar - about a disabled marine who infiltrates a race of giant blue aliens - combines live action with digitally-enhanced performances. It was reportedly the most expensive film ever made, with a budget of at least $300m.
The Hollywood blockbustersalso dominated South Korea's box office for the first weekend of the New Year, with a single homegrown film listed among the top 10, data showed Monday, according to Yonhap News.
Avatar drew 1.25 million people from Friday through Sunday, taking in 43 percent of the nationwide audience during the period and breaking the 6 million mark just two weeks after its release, according to the Korean Film Council, which collects box office data across the country through an online movie ticket network.
In second place came "Jeon Woo Chi: The Taoist Wizard," directed by Choi Dong-hoon and based on a novel about a legendary, wayward Taoist from the 16th century. With 800,000 tickets sold over the three-day period, Jeon Woo Chi absorbed 27 percent of the total audience as the only Korean film to stay among the most popular 10 movies. It has so far drawn 3.26 million since its Dec.23 release.
Mystery action movie "Sherlock Holmes" was third with 363,000 people (12 percent), followed by the family film "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" with 190,000 people and "Nine," a musical that follows the life of an Italian director, with 189,000 people.
"In the period of November to December, there were not many Korean movies newly released and compelling enough to sweep the box office," said Han Seung-hee, a market researcher at the film council.
Overall in 2009, local films accounted for around 30 percent of the newly released films and took in about half of the total audience, Han said.
