Jonah Flees From the Lord

1The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2“Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

3But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

4Then the Lord sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. 5All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.

But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep. 6The captain went to him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us, and we will not perish.”

7Then the sailors said to each other, “Come, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.” They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.

8So they asked him, “Tell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?”

9He answered, “I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the land.”

10This terrified them and they asked, “What have you done?” (They knew he was running away from the Lord, because he had already told them so.)

11The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, “What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?”

12“Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”

13Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before. 14Then they cried to the Lord, “O Lord, please do not let us die for taking this man’s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man, for you, O Lord, have done as you pleased.” 15Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm. 16At this the men greatly feared the Lord, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows to him.

17But the Lord provided a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was inside the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah’s Prayer

1From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2He said:

“In my distress I called to the Lord,

and he answered me.

From the depths of the gravea I called for help,

and you listened to my cry.

3You hurled me into the deep,

into the very heart of the seas,

and the currents swirled about me;

all your waves and breakers

swept over me.

4I said, ‘I have been banished

from your sight;

yet I will look again

toward your holy temple.’

5The engulfing waters threatened me,b

the deep surrounded me;

seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6To the roots of the mountains I sank down;

the earth beneath barred me in forever.

But you brought my life up from the pit,

O Lord my God.

7“When my life was ebbing away,

I remembered you, Lord,

and my prayer rose to you,

to your holy temple.

8“Those who cling to worthless idols

forfeit the grace that could be theirs.

9But I, with a song of thanksgiving,

will sacrifice to you.

What I have vowed I will make good.

Salvation comes from the Lord.”

10And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

Jonah’s Prayer

Jonah’s Anger at the Lord’s Compassion

1But Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. 2He prayed to the Lord, “O Lord, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

4But the Lord replied, “Have you any right to be angry?”

5Jonah went out and sat down at a place east of the city. There he made himself a shelter, sat in its shade and waited to see what would happen to the city. 6Then the Lord God provided a vine and made it grow up over Jonah to give shade for his head to ease his discomfort, and Jonah was very happy about the vine. 7But at dawn the next day God provided a worm, which chewed the vine so that it withered. 8When the sun rose, God provided a scorching east wind, and the sun blazed on Jonah’s head so that he grew faint. He wanted to die, and said, “It would be better for me to die than to live.”

9But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?”

“I do,” he said. “I am angry enough to die.”

10But the Lord said, “You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. 11But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?”

4여호와께서 대풍을 바다 위에 내리시매 바다 가운데 폭풍이 대작하여 배가 거의 깨어지게 된지라 5사공이 두려워하여 각각 자기의 신을 부르고 또 배를 가볍게 하려고 그 가운데 물건을 바다에 던지니라 그러나 요나는 배 밑층에 내려가서 누워 깊이 잠이 든지라 6선장이 나아가서 그에게 이르되 자는 자여 어찜이뇨 일어나서 네 하나님께 구하라 혹시 하나님이 우리를 생각하사 망하지 않게 하시리라 하니라

7그들이 서로 이르되 자 우리가 제비를 뽑아 이 재앙이 누구로 인하여 우리에게 임하였나 알자 하고 곧 제비를 뽑으니 제비가 요나에게 당한지라 8무리가 그에게 이르되 청컨대 이 재앙이 무슨 연고로 우리에게 임하였는가 고하라 네 생업이 무엇이며 어디서 왔으며 고국이 어디며 어느 민족에 속하였느냐 9그가 대답하되 나는 히브리 사람이요 바다와 육지를 지으신 하늘의 하나님 여호와를 경외하는 자로라 하고

10자기가 여호와의 낯을 피함인줄을 그들에게 고하였으므로 무리가 알고 심히 두려워하여 이르되 네가 어찌하여 이렇게 행하였느냐 하니라 11바다가 점점 흉용한지라 무리가 그에게 이르되 우리가 너를 어떻게 하여야 바다가 우리를 위하여 잔잔하겠느냐 12그가 대답하되 나를 들어 바다에 던지라 그리하면 바다가 너희를 위하여 잔잔하리라 너희가 이 큰 폭풍을 만난 것이 나의 연고인줄을 내가 아노라 하니라 13그러나 그 사람들이 힘써 노를 저어 배를 육지에 돌리고자 하다가 바다가 그들을 향하여 점점 더 흉용하므로 능히 못한지라 14무리가 여호와께 부르짖어 가로되 여호와여 구하고 구하오니 이 사람의 생명 까닭에 우리를 멸망시키지 마옵소서 무죄한 피를 우리에게 돌리지 마옵소서 주 여호와께서는 주의 뜻대로 행하심이니이다 하고

15요나를 들어 바다에 던지매 바다의 뛰노는 것이 곧 그친지라 16그 사람들이 여호와를 크게 두려워하여 여호와께 제물을 드리고 서원을 하였더라

17여호와께서 이미 큰 물고기를 예비하사 요나를 삼키게 하셨으므로 요나가 삼일 삼야를 물고기 배에 있으니라

2가로되 내가 받는 고난을 인하여 여호와께 불러 아뢰었삽더니 주께서 내게 대답하셨고 내가 스올의 뱃속에서 부르짖었삽더니 주께서 나의 음성을 들으셨나이다

3주께서 나를 깊음속 바다 가운데 던지셨으므로 큰 물이 나를 둘렀고 주의 파도와 큰 물결이 다 내 위에 넘쳤나이다

4내가 말하기를 내가 주의 목전에서 쫓겨났을찌라도 다시 주의 성전을 바라보겠다 하였나이다

5물이 나를 둘렀으되 영혼까지 하였사오며 깊음이 나를 에웠고 바다 풀이 내 머리를 쌌나이다

6내가 산의 뿌리까지 내려갔사오며 땅이 그 빗장으로 나를 오래도록 막았사오나 나의 하나님 여호와여 주께서 내 생명을 구덩이에서 건지셨나이다

7내 영혼이 내 속에서 피곤할 때에 내가 여호와를 생각하였삽더니 내 기도가 주께 이르렀사오며 주의 성전에 미쳤나이다

8무릇 거짓되고 헛된 것을 숭상하는 자는 자기에게 베푸신 은혜를 버렸사오나

9나는 감사하는 목소리로 주께 제사를 드리며 나의 서원을 주께 갚겠나이다 구원은 여호와께로서 말미암나이다 하니라

10여호와께서 그 물고기에게 명하시매 요나를 육지에 토하니라

1 요나가 심히 싫어하고 성내며2여호와께 기도하여 가로되 여호와여 내가 고국에 있을 때에 이러하겠다고 말씀하지 아니하였나이까 그러므로 내가 빨리 다시스로 도망하였사오니 주께서는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시는 하나님이신 줄을 내가 알았음이니이다 3여호와여 원컨대 이제 내 생명을 취하소서 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나음이니이다 4여호와께서 이르시되 너의 성냄이 어찌 합당하냐 하시니라

5요나가 성에서 나가서 그 성 동편에 앉되 거기서 자기를 위하여 초막을 짓고 그 그늘 아래 앉아서 성읍이 어떻게 되는 것을 보려 하니라 6하나님 여호와께서 박 넝쿨을 준비하사 요나 위에 가리우게 하셨으니 이는 그 머리를 위하여 그늘이 지게 하며 그 괴로움을 면케 하려 하심이었더라 요나가 박 넝쿨을 인하여 심히 기뻐하였더니 7하나님이 벌레를 준비하사 이튿날 새벽에 그 박 넝쿨을 씹게 하시매 곧 시드니라 8해가 뜰 때에 하나님이 뜨거운 동풍을 준비하셨고 해는 요나의 머리에 쬐매 요나가 혼곤하여 스스로 죽기를 구하여 가로되 사는 것보다 죽는 것이 내게 나으니이다

9하나님이 요나에게 이르시되 네가 이 박 넝쿨로 인하여 성냄이 어찌 합당하냐 그가 대답하되 내가 성내어 죽기까지 할찌라도 합당하니이다 10여호와께서 가라사대 네가 수고도 아니하였고 배양도 아니하였고 하룻밤에 났다가 하룻밤에 망한 이 박 넝쿨을 네가 아꼈거든 11하물며 이 큰 성읍, 니느웨에는 좌우를 분변치 못하는 자가 십 이만 여명이요 육축도 많이 있나니 내가 아끼는 것이 어찌 합당치 아니하냐

 

왜 요나는 다시스로 가려 했나?

 

하나님은 요나에게 앗수르의 수도인 니느웨로 가서 그들의 죄악과 부패상에 대해 외치라고 하셨다 (욘1:1). 하지만 그는 욥바로 가서, 멀리 서쪽에 있는 다시스로 가는 배를 탔다 왜그랬을까?

 요나 당시 이스라엘은 점차 부강해지던 여로보암 2세 때였다. 이때의 앗수르는 이스라엘을 위협하는 적대적인 세력이었다. 요나는 포악하고 잔인한 니느웨가 죄 값을 받는 것은 당연한 일이라고 생각하였기에 니느웨가 회개하고 하나님의 메시지를 받아들이는 것이 불공평하다고 생각했다 (욘 4:2) 이스라엘 만이 하나님의 사랑을 받을 자격이 있다고 믿었기에 하나님이 다를 이방 민족에게 사랑과 은혜를 베푸시는 것을 보고 싶지 않았다. 그러나 하나님의 생각은 달랐다 (욘 4:11).

 

요나가 박넝쿨 아래서 만난 하나님은 어떤 분이셨을까?

첫째, 이스라엘뿐만 아니라 다른 민족들도 사랑하시는 분이었다. 요나는 하나님께서 멸망시키겠다고 하셨던 니느웨 성 백성들이 회개하고 용서받은 것을 보자 무척 화를 내었다 (욘 4:3-4). 그리고 햇볕으로부터 그늘을 만들어 주던 박넝쿨이 벌레 먹고 시들고 불볕 더위가 몰려오자, 괴로워하며 죽기를 간구했다 (욘 4:8).

 그러나 하나님은 이 일을 통해 아버지의 마음을 가르쳐 주셨다. 요나가 잠시 동안 아꼈던 박넝쿨보다 더 소중한 사람들과 수많은 육축이 있는 니느웨를 하나님은 아끼신다고 말씀하셨고, 그들이 회개할 때 용서하는 것이 옳은 일이 아니냐고 물으셨다. 하나님의 구원 계획과 섭리는 이스라엘 민족에만 국한되지 않고 모든 민족에게 해당되는 것임을 나타내신 것이었다.

 둘째, 우주적으로 통치하시는 분이었다. 하나님의 명령을 거역하여 다시스로 도망갈 때 보내셨던 큰 폭풍, 바다속에 던져진 요나를 삼킨 큰 물고기, 쑥쑥 자라게도 하셨다가 벌레를 보내 죽이기도 하신 박넝쿨, 박넝쿨을 갉아먹게 하신 벌레 등, 하나님의 통치가 미치지 않는 곳이 없음을 알려 주셨다.

 

묵상  나로 하여금 사람들에게 인애의 마음들을 베풀게 하시며 때론 환경과 사람들이 사망의길, 음침한 곳 스올의 길과 어둠의 길로 유혹하며 강포의 길로 끌고 갈지라도 하나님의 또다른 다른 길들을 보게 하시며 회개하고 다시 주님께서 인도하는 길로 전진할 수 있도록 나를 도우소서.
