Meet Jeremy Scott's Muse: K-Pop Star CL제레미 스캇의 뮤즈 CL을 만나다.

CL—arguably one of the fiercest girls to come out of Seoul—is the leader of the mega K-pop sensation, 2NE1. The four-member band consisting of CL, Dara, Minzy, and Bom, first established themselves as a global act after winning MTV Iggy’s Best New Band in the World contest in 2011, voted on by fans.서울의 가장 거센 소녀들 중 하나란 사실이 틀림없는 CL은 케이팝의 엄청난 인기 그룹인 2NE1의 리더이다. CL, 다라, 민지, 봄 이렇게 4명으로 구성된 그룹은 2011년 팬들의 투표로 선정된 MTV Iggy’s Best New Band in the World 콘테스트에서 수상하게 됨으로써 처음으로 그들의 이름을 전세계에 알렸다.
Their music—a motley mix of electronic, hip-hop, pop, and R&B—has since found fans in artists like Will.I.Am, who recently took the girls under his wing. The hip-hop mogul went along to produce a few tracks for them, which was d0cumented in an Intel campaign.일렉트로닉, 힙합, 팝, 알앤비 장르등을 뒤섞은 이들의 음악은최근에 그녀들에게 관심을 기울인 윌아이엠과 같이 세계적인 아티스트들을 포함한 팬들을 거느리게 했다. 이 힙합 거물은 2NE1을 위한 음악을 몇 곡 만들었으며 이는 인텔 캠페인에서도 보여진다.
The fashion world has taken notice as well, namely, Jeremy Scott who sees the members of 2NE1 as his muses and dedicated a shoe style to the group.Scott even designed the group’s ensembles for their first worldwide tour last summer, with some of the styles trickling into his Fall 2013 collection’s runway. The group also recently filmed a commercial for Adidas Originals with Nicki Minaj and Sky Ferreira, which whipped the online community into a frenzy.패션계 또한 2NE1을 주목했는데 즉, 2NE1을 그의 뮤즈로 삼고 그 그룹을 위한 신발을 제작한 제레미 스캇의 눈에 포착되게 된다. 스캇은 심지어 지난 여름에 개최된 투애니원의 첫번째 월드투어를 위한 의상들을 제작하기도 했다. 이 의상들은 그의 Fall 2013 collection 런웨이의 일부를 보여주었다.2NE1은 최근에 니키 미나즈와 스카이 페레이라와 함께 아디다스 오리지널스의 광고를 찍었는데 이는 온라인 커뮤니티를 뜨겁게 달구었다.
CL—on a small vacation stateside—was front row at Scott’s show, sitting next to other downtown cool girls like Natalia Kills, Kat Graham, and rapper A$AP Rocky. A couple of days later, she had a photo shoot with Terry Richardson. Here, she takes a moment with ELLE.com to share what she’s learned about becoming the world’s next top pop star.미국에서의 짧은 휴식을 가진 CL은 제레미 스캇쇼의 프런트로에서 다운타운 쿨 걸들인 나탈리아 킬스, 캐터리나 그레이엄과 래퍼인 에이셉 라키의 옆에 앉아 쇼를 관람하였다. 며칠 뒤 그녀는 테리 리처드슨과 사진 촬영을 했다.여기서 CL은 엘르닷컴과 세계적인 팝스타가 되는것에 대해서 그녀가 배웠던 것들에 관한 대화를 나누었다.
ELLE: Who is CL?CL: I have an alter ego between CL and Chaerin. I can be the baddest female onstage. As CL I want it to be that way. When it comes to just me, when I’m by myself with my family with my best friends, I don’t want to be CL. They know me so well that I can’t be CL. But I want to keep it that way, you know? Like Beyonce and her alter ego Sasha Fierce.ELLE : CL이 누군가요?CL : 저는 CL과 채린이라는 두가지의 자아를 갖고 있어요. 무대위에서 가장 나쁜 여자(the baddest female)가 될 수 있고 그게 CL로서 제가 원하는 모습이에요. 제 자신으로 돌아올 때, 저의 가족들과 친한 친구들과 함께 있을때 전 CL이 되길 원치 않아요. 그들도 제가 CL이 될 수 없다는 걸 잘 알고 있고요. 하지만 전 이런식으로 두 가지 모습을 갖고싶어요. 아실거예요. 비욘세가 비욘세와 사샤 피어스라는 두 자아를 가진 것처럼 말이죠.
ELLE: What’s your relationship like with Jeremy Scott?CL: He’s my best friend. He’s like my big brother. He looks out for me. We met each other when he saw the “Fire” video [2NE1’s first single] and flew all the way to Korea to see me. It was actually for a photo shoot for Adidas. He didn’t have to come but he did. You know when you meet someone and you can connect, that click, we had that.ELLE : 제레미 스캇과는 무슨 관계인가요?CL : 제 절친한 친구에요. 마치 제 오빠같이요. 그는 저를 보살펴줘요. 그가 2NE1의 첫번째 싱글인 Fire의 뮤직비디오를 보고 우리를 만나러 한국으로 날아왔을 때 처음 만났어요. 그건 아디다스 사진 촬영 때문이었는데요. 그는 굳이 올 필요가 없었는데도 왔던거였어요. 왜 있잖아요. 당신이 누군가를 만나서 그 사람과 교감을 나누었을때 순간적으로 통하는 거요. 우리가 그랬던거죠.
ELLE: You have an empowering song called “Ugly,” about not feeling beautiful. Where did that stem from?CL: It kinda came from me. I was talking to him in the studio. And no one here understands, but they do back in Korea. You know how Koreans are more strict and people from around the world think that being different is wrong. I don’t understand, you’re unique. I love being myself and love people that are themselves and just, you know, “I’m doing me” type of people. I have respect for those people and love for those people but some people don’t understand that. So for me, I’m seen in public so I’m attacked a lot. I was feeling down one day and talking to him. I was like, "You know, maybe I am ugly to those people." So we talked on and on and he wrote that song.ELLE : 아름답지 않은 심정에 대한 Ugly라는 제목의 힘찬 곡이 있잖아요. 그 노래를 만들게 된 계기가 있다면요?CL : 저로부터 나왔다고 할 수 있어요. 스튜디오에서 테디와 이야기를 나누고 있었어요. 그리고 여기서는 아무도 이해하지 못하지만 한국으로 가면 이해할 수 있는거에요.한국 사람들은 더 엄격하고 전세계의 사람들이 다르다는걸 잘못되었다고 생각해요. 난 이해할 수 없어요. 당신은 특별해요. 저는 제 스스로를 사랑하고 다른 이들을 그 자체로 사랑해요. 자기 자신의 일을 하는(I’m doing me) 사람들을요. 그런 사람들을 존중해왔고 사랑해왔지만 일부 사람들은 이해하지 못해요. 그래서 저같은 경우 공적인 부분에서 많이 공격을 당했어요. 어느날은 우울해져서 테디와 얘기를 했어요. "아마 그 사람들에게는 제가 못생겼을수도 있을거예요."라고요. 그렇게 계속 대화를 했고 그 결과 Ugly가 만들어진거예요.
ELLE: In Korea, lots of people get plastic surgery. Do you ever feel pressured to get work done as well—especially as a star?CL: You know? YG [2NE1’s record label] told me to. They told me to get plastic surgery before my debut. I stood up for myself and said "No, I’m not doing it." Like I said before, I love CL, but I still want to be Chaerin. And if I felt like I had to change I would. But I love the natural way I look. I said no and I’m not planning to.ELLE : 한국에서 많은 사람들이 성형수술을 하잖아요. 당신도 특히 연예인으로서 그러한 강요를 받은적이 있나요?CL : 그게요. YG에서 말한적이 있어요. 데뷔 전에 성형수술을 받아보라고요. 전 거부하고 "아니오, 하지 않을거예요."라고 말했어요. 이전에 말했다시피 전 CL을 사랑해요. 하지만 여전히 '채린'이기를 원하기도 하죠. 만약 제가 변하고자 했다면 성형수술을 했을테지만 내 자신의 자연스러운 모습을 사랑해요. 그런 이유로 거절했고 그럴 계획도 없어요.
ELLE: Tell me about the high fashion brands you wear. One video has you guys wearing all Balmain or all Givenchy, plus vintage Alexander McQueen or even young designers like Mary Katranzou and also Gareth Pugh. How did this come about?CL: We just love shopping. I don’t look at the brand, I don’t look at the most pricey outfit. Even if it’s a dollar, I don’t care. That’s why I didn’t really know what I was wearing today because I don’t care. If it looks good it doesn’t matter.ELLE : 당신이 걸치고 있는 하이패션 브랜드들을 말해주세요. 어떤 비디오에서 2NE1이 모두 발망 혹은 지방시를 입고 있던데,더해서 빈티지 알렉산더 맥퀸이나 신진 디자이너들인 마리 카트란주와 가레스 퓨를 입고 있더군요. 어떻게 그런식으로 입게 된거죠?CL : 우린 그저 쇼핑하는걸 좋아해요. 전 브랜드나 가장 값비싼 옷을 의식하지 않아요. 1달러의 옷이라도 개의치않아요. 그래서 전 오늘 입고있는 옷도 잘 모르고 신경쓰지도 않는거예요. 옷이 괜찮아보인다면 그런건 중요하지 않으니까요.
ELLE: Your latest video, “I Love You” was a little more mature and looked very Versace-esque.CL: Exactly. That’s what I was going for. Last year I was collecting vintage Versace and Chanel, the big medallions. And you know, right now everyone is going for that, it’s funny. I started collecting it two years ago but they didn’t have any. Now they’re putting it out so much it’s easy to get. You know those vintage scarves, the vintage Versace scarves? I was wearing them all the time. I told my stylist "Let’s go for it." In the video for "I Love You" we tried something different as 2NE1. We’re more electro-hip-hop. I was like, "We should do something different." There wasn’t an album coming out but we wanted to drop a single for our fans and 2NE1’s career. We went for a very sexy, mature—you got it!—Versace. You get my point.ELLE : 가장 최근 뮤직비디오인 I Love You는 좀 더 성숙하고 베르사체 풍의 스타일인 것 같던데요.CL : 그렇죠. 그게 제가 추구했던 점이에요. 작년에 저는 베르사체와 샤넬의 빈티지 장식들을 모으고 있었어요. 그리고 지금 모든 사람들이 그렇게 하고 있죠. 이런건 재밌어요. 저는 2년전에 모으기 시작했지만 그들은 아무것도 가지고 있지 않았죠. 이제 이런것들을 많이 내놓으니 구하기가 쉬워요. 빈티지 스카프나 빈티지 베르사체 스카프 같은 것들 있죠? 저는 항상 이것들을 착용해왔어요. 제가 스타일리스트에게 "이거 한번 써먹어볼까" 제안했고 I Love You 뮤비에서 색다른 2NE1의 모습을 시도해봤어요. 더 일렉트로 힙합의 음악이었고요. "우린 보다 새로운 걸 해야해"란 생각이었어요.나온 앨범은 없었지만 우리의 팬분들이나 2NE1의 활동을 위해 싱글이라도 내놓길 원했지요. 아주 섹시하고 성숙한(맞아요!) 베르사체 스타일을 택했고요. 그 얘기를 한거예요.
ELLE: Who is your favorite designer?CL: Am I allowed to say Jeremy Scott? Because people will always say anyone other than Jeremy Scott because he’s my friend. I love Chanel. Everything about her was personal. All of those lions she made, she handmade them. Red and green, they were her favorite colors. She kept it personal and real and she was a woman. Everyone loves her. I really like Chrome Hearts, too. I know their family and designers.ELLE : 당신이 가장 좋아하는 디자이너는요?CL : 제레미 스캇이라고 말해도 되죠? 제레미 스캇이 제 친구이기 때문에 사람들은 항상 제레미 스캇말고 다른 사람을 말하거든요. 저는 샤넬을 사랑해요. 그녀의 모든것이 인간적이었어요. 그녀가 만든 사자들은 그녀의 손으로 직접 만들어진거예요. 빨간색과 초록색이 그녀가 가장 좋아하는 색이고요. 인간적이고 사실적이려고 했고 그녀는 여성이었어요. 모든이들이 그녀를 사랑해요. 크롬하츠도 마찬가지로 제가 정말 좋아하죠. 크롬하츠의 가족과 디자이너들과도 아는 사이에요.
ELLE: And Fashion icons?CL: I love Grace Jones. She’s everything. I don’t know, There are so many that I don’t want to shout out names. Aaliyah. I’m into '90’s fashion right now. Like wearing those big pants and small tops. I’m really into that right now.ELLE : 가장 좋아하는 패션 아이콘은요?CL : 그레이스 존스요. 그녀는 전부에요. 댈 수 없을만큼 많은 많은 사람들이 있는데요. 아 알리아도요.전 지금 90년대 패션에 심취해있어요. 이런 커다란 하의와 작은 상의들을 입는 스타일처럼요. 정말 꽂혀있는 상태에요.
ELLE: Any plans for a 2NE1 album stateside?CL: Not yet. But we want to do a couple of more songs in English. It’s amazing how they can connect to it when it’s in Korean. It’s amazing when you’re onstage and these people are singing in Korean. But in order to do this and understand the lyrics and get into the song I want to make a couple more English songs.ELLE : 미국 앨범의 계획은 어떻게 되나요?CL : 아직요. 다만 영어로 된 곡들을 내고 싶어요. 팬들이 한국어로 이루어진 음악을 듣고 교감할 수 있다는건 놀라워요. 무대에서 팬들이 한국어로 노래를 부르는게 신기해요. 그렇지만 이런식으로 가사를 이해하면서 음악을 즐길 수 있으려면 영어로 된 곡들이 있어야해요.
ELLE: You have such a big gay following. Do you know about that?CL: Actually yeah. And lesbians too. And drag queens. I love them! I have so many gay friends and I love them so much because they’re fun. You know, I can’t be friends with guys. You can girl talk with them. They’re so special and so talented. And they’re so fast with stuff. I can’t ask “do I look good” to my girlfriends but I will ask my gay friends because they will be honest. They’ll be like, “no girl.” I can’t do that to girls or guys, they won’t be honest. I love them because of that.ELLE : 당신에게 많은 게이팬들이 있어요. 알고 있어요?CL : 사실은 그래요. 레즈비언들도 마찬가지고요. 드래그퀸(여장남자)도요. 그들을 사랑해요! 제게는 많은 게이 친구들이 있고 그들을 사랑해요. 그들은 정말 재밌거든요.전 남자들과는 친구가 될 수 없어요. 당신도 그들과 여자들에 대한 얘기를 할 수 있을거예요. 그들은 정말 특별하고 재능이 많아요. 모든일에 빠르게 대처하고요.여자 친구들에게는 "나 괜찮아보여?"라고 물을 수 없지만 게이 친구들에게는 물을 수 있어요. 그들은 솔직하거든요. 그러면 이렇게 말하겠죠. "아니".저는 여자들이나 남자들에게는 이렇게 할 수 없어요. 그들은 솔직하지 않을테니까. 그래서 그들을 사랑해요. 내가 좋아하는 노래중에 하나인 <Ugly>가 이런계기로 나오게 될준 몰랐다. 채린이는 원래 여린면도 있긴하지만 항상 당당할줄만 알았다.... 난그래도 무대를 즐길줄알며, 자기를 사랑하고, 당당하게 사는 CL, 이채린이 좋다.
