and people around us so we could be happier.
If you've ever had a boyfriend/girlfriend
you know what I'm talking about!
We try to change our spouses, our children, our jobs,
our businesses......everything outside of us to try and achieve happiness.
And then we get stressed out or angry when these things don't go our way.
I used to do this too...until I read this story.
우리는 대부분 주변에 있는 것들 혹은 사람들을 바꿈으로 인해 더 큰 행복을 얻고 싶어해요.
남자친구 여자친구를 예로 들면 제가 무슨 말을 하려는지 알거에요~
우리의 배우자를, 아이들을, 일을, 그리고 비지니스까지도.. 우리 외부의 것들을 바꾸면서 행복을 얻으려곤 하죠.
저도 마찬가지로 그래왔구요.
지금 제가 말하려는 이 스토리를 읽기 전까지는요.
"모든사람들은 세상을 바꾸려고는 하나 정작 자기자신을 바꾸려고하진 않는다"

There was a young boy and father at home one Friday night.
Because the father worked so much and was so busy providing for the family,
he wasn't able to play with his son.
While the boy was drawing on the table, the father looked over at him.
"Son. Tomorrow, let's go to the park and play some catch,
eat lunch and spend the whole day together."
The son was ecstatic! He jumped up with wide eyes and a big smile.
"Seriously, dad? You don't have to work tomorrow??"
"Nope, I'm all yours." The father replied.
Filled with joy, the boy hopped around all over the room.
When he finally settled down, the father put him to bed.
And that night he went to bed with a smile on his face,
dreaming of all the fun they would have.
어느 금요일 저녁, 어린 아들과 아버지는 집에서 시간을 보내고 있었어요.
아버지는 일이 워낙 바쁘고 가장으로서 역할에만 충실했기 때문에 실상 아들과 놀아줄 시간이 그리 많지 않았죠.
아들이 테이블에 앉아 그림을 그리고 있는 모습을 보며
아버지는 아들에게 이렇게 말했어요.
"아들아, 내일은 우리 같이 시간을 보내자. 공원가서 공놀이도 하고 점심도 같이 먹고 하루종일 아빠랑 놀자!"
아들은 너무 기뻐 열광했죠. 눈을 급격히 커지며 팔짝팔짝 뛰는 그의 얼굴엔 미소가 가득했어요.
"우왓! 정말요 아빠? 내일은 일이 없으세요?"
"없단다. 내일은 온종일 너와 시간을 보낼거야."
기쁨에 잠겨 아들은 온 방안을 뛰어다녔어요.
조금 진정이되자 아버지는 아들을 어서 잠자리로 들여보냈죠.
아들은 얼굴에 미소를 띈채 얼마나 재밌는 일들이 기다리고 있을지 기대하며 잠들었습니다.

The next morning, the son woke up bright and early, ran to wake his dad up.
"Dad! We have to get ready go!"
His father had just woken up,
so he got ready and came downstairs, where his son was eagerly waiting.
It was still a bit early and the father wanted to have his usual coffee
and newspaper before leaving.
But his son was waiting....
Then an idea popped into his head!
He remembered seeing a page in the newspaper
with a picture of the Earth on it.
"Nice, I'll have him do this while I finish my coffee."
He found the page and took it out, then tore it into small pieces and gave it to his son.
"Put this puzzle together first, and then we can leave."
The son, excited about the day and eager to prove himself,
took the pieces and spread them on the glass table.
His father, feeling a little guilty,
but also happy he could finish his morning routine,
smiled and went back to
reading his paper.
다음날 아침, 아들은 일찍 일어나서 아버지를 깨우러 달려갔어요.
"아빠! 우리 빨리 가요!"
아버지는 곧이어 일어나 준비를 하고 아들이 기대감에 부풀어 기다리고 있는 1층으로 내려갔어요.
아직 조금 이른 시간이었기도 하고 아버지는 아들과 나가기전 매일 아침마다 즐기는 커피한잔과 신문을 끝내고 싶었어요.
하지만 아들이 저러고 기다리고 있으니....
때마침 아이디어가 떠올랐어요. 그는 전에 지구사진이 담긴 신문 한장을 봤던걸 기억해냈어요.
'좋아, 커피를 다 마실 동안만 아들에게 이걸 하라고 해야겠다.'
그는 그 페이지를 찾아서 펼치고 조각조각 찢은 후 아들에게 건네 주었어요.
"이 퍼즐을 먼저 다 맞추고나서 우리 나가자!"
아들은 곧 펼쳐질 하루와 자기가 할 수 있다는걸 자랑스럽게 보여줄 생각에 들떠 재빨리 조각들을 들고 테이블로 달려갔어요.
아버지는 약간의 미안한 마음이 들었으나 한편으로는 아침여유를 좀더 즐길 수 있겠다는 기쁜마음에
미소지으며 다시 신문을 마저 읽기 시작했어요.
A few minutes later, the boy pulled the newspaper down.
"Dad! I'm finished!! I'm done with the puzzle!"
The father was surprised,
but also a little proud that his son was able to do it so fast.
The boy held up the picture of the Earth,
and sure enough, it was complete!
몇분이 흘렀을까..
아들이 아버지 신문을 밑으로 잡아댕기며
"아빠! 다했어요!! 퍼즐을 다 완성했어요!"
아버지는 놀랐죠. 하지만 이렇게 빠른 시간에 퍼즐을 다 맞췄다는 사실에 내심 자랑스럽기도 했어요.
아들이 손에 펼쳐든 지구사진은 정말로 다 완성되어있었어요.
"How did you finish it so fast, son?"
"Well, it was kind of hard in the beginning
and I wanted to quit, but I decided to keep going."
"Then a piece fell under the table so I had to go down and find it."
"Since the table was made of glass and clear, when I looked up,
I could see the back of the puzzle. There was a picture of a man behind it.
Then it was easy to make after that."
"I just put the man together, and the world fell into place!"
"어떻게 이렇게 빨리 끝냈니?"
"음.. 처음엔 좀 어려워서 포기하고 싶었는데 꾹 참고 계속했어요. 그런데 조각 하나가 테이블 밑으로 떨어진거에요.
그래서 몸을 구부려 주어야했는데, 저 테이블이 투명하잖아요.
밑에서 위를 쳐다보니 퍼즐 뒷면이 보였어요.
뒷면은 어떤 사람의 모습이 담긴 사진이었는데 그걸 보니 너무 쉬워진거에요!
전 그냥 사람모양을 따라 맞춘건데 지구가 완성이 되더라구요!"
This was a "quake story" for me.
Meaning my world got rocked.
I was always trying to change things out of my control.
And then getting upset when the situation didn't go the way I wanted.
This simplified everything.
"All I have to do is work on improving myself and my world will get better??"
저에게 이 스토리는 소름을 제공했어요. 무언가 깨달음의 소름이랄까요?
저는 항상 제가 손쓸 수 없는 부분을 바꾸려고만 해왔어요. 또한 상황이 제 뜻대로 되지 않으면
스트레스 받기 일쑤였구요.
이 이야기는 저에게 모든것을 아주 간단하게 해주었어요.
"내가 신경써야 하는건 내 자신을 위한 발전이라.. 그러면 나의 삶이 더욱 나아진다?"
So I did...work on improving myself.
And my world did get better.
This was such a simple concept
but I never understood it when I was younger.
The only thing we can control is ourselves
and our opinion of things that happen to us.
If we work to improve,
even by just 1% everyday, our world will fall into place.
그래서 전 제 자신을 향상시키는데 목표를 두고 움직였어요.
그러다보니 정말로 저의 삶은 더욱 좋아졌어요.
이렇게 간단한걸 어렸을땐 전혀 이해하지 못했었죠.
우리가 바꿀수 있는 한가지는 바로 우리 자신이며 우리앞에 일어나는 일에 관련된 생각일뿐이에요.
우리 스스로 발전을 위해 노력한다면, 매일 단 1% 라도 우리 세상은 더 나아지기 마련이에요.
