1. The Problem: Melon says that a criterion called 'internal data' was used for selection process of questionable Melon Music Awards winners.
- Melon awards website clearly says that the winners for main award categories including ‘Album of the year’ and ‘Rookie of the year’ will be selected based on 70% streaming data and 30% voting results.
- There are many different charts on Melon website but there’s nothing with so called “internal data” applied to them.
2. The Question: Is “Melon Chart” a reliable source for various KPOP awards and charts?
- If Melon can use their “internal data” for selecting their award winners, does that mean their existing charts can also be different from their 40% Streaming + 60% Download standards?
- Does Melon share this “internal data” with Gaon and other popular KPOP charts? Are these charts aware of this important “internal data” which can change a data-based award winner to internal-data-based winner?
3. The Complaint: Melon’s deceptive attitude toward its customers
- While there are casual streaming customers, I believe most of the heavy users are fandoms of KPOP artists who are willing to pay fees to meet Melon’s chart and award standards for their artists. This “internal data” controversy makes us fans to question Melon’s fairness and public confidence.
- Melon cannot escape from the fact that they have been forcing fans to spend money on Melon by continually showing number of users, share percentage, and 5-minute charts on their website. If their announced standards (before this “internal data” surfaced) were nothing but gimmicks, there’s no reason for us to spend more money on Melon’s services or their shady standards.
