The college entrance exams were held last week in Korea. Some 600,000 students took the test.
지난 주 약 600,000명의 한국학생들은 수능을 치뤘습니다.
The belief is that if they do poorly on it, their lives are ruined. And if they do well, their lives…will be great?
Whenever I ask students and parents why they believe this exam is so important, I inevitably get the same responses:
“So I can go to a good university.”
And then what?
“Then I can get a good job in a good company.” or “I will have more options available to me.”
And then?
“And then…(shrugs shoulders)… make money and get married?”
Like a tape recorded message, the answers are all the same. And that’s about where the vision stops.
수능을 망친 학생들은 인생이 모두 끝났다고 생각합니다. 그럼, 반대로 좋은 점수가 나온 학생들의 인생은 장미빛으로 펼쳐지는걸까요?
학생들과 학부모님들께 시험이 왜 중요하다고 생각하는지 질문할때마다, 저는 예상한 대로 같은 대답을 듣습니다:
“그래야 좋은 대학에 들어가죠.”
그리구요?
“그 후 좋은 회사에 들어갈 수 있죠.” 아니면 “더 많은 기회들을 잡을 수 있죠.”
그리구요?
“그리고…(어깨를 들썩이며)… 돈 벌고 결혼하겠죠?”
마치 녹음테이프 메세지처럼, 항상 대답은 똑같아요. 그리고 그 시점에서 비전이 끝납니다.
So, is it worth it? 그래서, 그럴만한 가치가 있나요?
Is it worth being the leader in suicide rates among all OECD countries? Is it worth having 1 out of 8 people suffer from depression?
Let’s work backwards and break it down:
“…make money and get married?”
OECD 국가를 모두 포함하여 자살률이 상위에 속해야 할만한 가치가 있나요? 8명중 1명이 우울증으로부터 고통받아야 할만한 가치가 있나요?
거꾸로 다시 생각해봅시다:
“…돈 벌고 결혼하겠죠?
If all you want to do is earn money, you can start right now! Here are some options:
원하는게 단지 돈일 경우, 지금당장 시작할수 있어요! 옵션이 있습니다:

Will you make a ton of money in the beginning? Probably not. But you’ll be your own boss. You would be investing in yourself.
For me, having worked in a Korean-style workplace and then starting my own business, this was a no-brainer. More money is not worth all of the stress, politics, and office drama.
우리는 지금 아이들이 적은 돈을 가지고도 본인의 일을 시작할 수 있는 시대에 살고 있습니다! 약간의 창의성과 기지를 발휘한다면, 아무것도 우리를 막을 수 없습니다.
처음부터 많은 돈을 거머질 수 있냐구요? 아마 불가능할거에요. 하지만 스스로의 사장이 되고 스스로를 위한 투자를 할 것입니다.
저 같은경우, 한국식 근무환경으로 먼저 일을 해본 후 제 사업에 뛰어들었습니다. 절대 쉬운결정은 아니었습니다만 돈을 더 많이 벌수 있다고 해서 스트레스와, 집단의 억압, 그리고 근무현장에서 일어나는 갖가지 사건사고를 견딜만한 가치는 없습니다.
“…more options available to me.”
We just covered this but I’ll say it again. All of the options are already here for you. You just need to get out of your comfort zone and take action!
“…good job in a good company.”
Almost all adults I meet and speak with are miserable at their companies. They’re always worried, mostly stressing about losing their jobs. Many do not feel appreciated and it seems like they’re just a cog in a wheel that can be replaced anytime.
“…더 많은 기회를 잡을 수 있어요.”
방금 이야기 했지만 다시한번 말할게요. 모든 옵션들은 벌써 여러분 앞에 펼쳐져 있습니다. 우리는 그저 편안한 환경에서 뛰어나와 행동으로 옮기기만 하면 됩니다.
“…좋은 회사에 들어가요.”
제가 그동안 만나고 이야기를 나눠왔던 거의 모든 어른들은 자신의 회사에 있어서 회의감을 가지고 있습니다. 항상 직업을 잃을 수 있다는 걱정속에 스트레스를 받고 있습니다. 대부분은 감사함을 느끼지 못하고 언제든지 대체될수 있는 톱니바퀴같은 존재처럼 보여집니다.
I’m not saying working in a company is bad. But it all depends on what you want to do with your life. And that one company doesn’t have to be the first and last stop for you.
회사에서 일하는게 나쁘다 라는 이야기가 절대 아닙니다. 하지만 모든것은 우리의 인생에서 우리가 무엇을 원하느냐에 달려있습니다. 하나의 회사가 당신의 처음이자 마지막이 될 필요는 없다는 말입니다.
You can either: 이렇게 해볼 수 있어요:
Dive right in and start your own business 내 사업에 뛰어들기or
Take a less risky approach and work on your own business on the side (when you’re not at your day job) 위험부담이 덜한 방식으로 접근하며 본업을 하며 부업으로 사업을 진행하기or
Make a little extra cash on the side by freelancing 프리랜서로서 조금씩 추가적으로 돈벌기
“…good university.”
What’s the point of university? Is it just to— fall into debt, get a job, and make money?
What if the reason for college was to actually learn something? To learn from the best teachers and to become a better version of yourself. A more valuable person that can affect some change in this world.
Would you need to get into a top institution in Korea for that?
“… 좋은 대학.”
대학을 가는 이유가 뭔가요? 학자금대출, 직업구하기, 돈벌기 용도 인가요?
만약 대학교가 정말 무언가를 배우고자 하는 곳이라면 어떨까요? 최고의 선생님들로부터 배우고 내 스스로 더 발전해나가고자 하는 곳. 세상의 변화에 조금이라도 기여를 할 수 있는 가치있는 사람이 되고자 하는 곳.
그것을 위해서 꼭 한국에서 제일가는 대학교에 갈 필요가 있나요?

Conclusion 결론Don’t believe the hype, the news, and all the little groups of people around you saying the college entrance exam is massively vital.
Think about what YOU really want to do with YOUR life. Not what everybody else is doing.
I just wanted to show you that there are other options. This one exam doesn’t tell you who you are. It’s not going to make or break you.
In the world we live in now, with all of the information and learning freely available to us, WE CONTROL OUR OWN DESTINY.
